Nintendo Playing with Power Guide › Super Mario Bros. 2 › Worlds

World 1

We give you some important pointers on how to tackle each area in Super Mario Bros. 2. To be on the safe side, try out each character and get to know their movements at the beginning of the game. Once you pass through the door below, the real fast-action fun starts. The first area is an easy win.

Choose Wisely

You can’t switch your character until you complete the current area. Make your selection carefully at the beginning of each world. Some characters work better in certain worlds than in others. Get to know which character plays the best for you in each of the seven worlds.

World 1-1

At two places in this stage, your jumping techniques are tested. Watch out! It’s all over if you fall into the waterfall—even if your Life Meter is full.

As you approach this waterfall, two logs fall at different intervals. Timing is critical. Watch your footing as you cross over to the other side.
All characters can jump across this waterfall, but you may need a running start. (Hold the B Button to build up speed!) After you land, look for the shortcut to get to the Little Boss quickly. Don’t waste the nearby bombs—you’ll need them to clear the path to the door!

Entering Sub-Space

Watch out for looming Shy Guys before you enter Sub-Space. Get a Mushroom here.

A Treasure Trove

There is a lot of grass in Sub-Space near the vine at the end of the first area of this level. Find a Mushroom in the same area.

Take a Shortcut

With enough speed (or a powerful jump), you can leap over the waterfall and take a shortcut to the Little Boss. Use a Bomb to destroy the wall and open the door—make sure you throw the Bomb just before it detonates.

How to Defeat the Little Boss

The first Little Boss you encounter is Birdo. Her main method of attack involves spitting eggs out of her mouth. When you have a chance, hop on top of her flying eggs.

Pick up the flying egg by quickly pressing the B Button. Aim and throw the eggs back at Birdo. She goes down once you hit her three times.

World 1-2

Right after you start your adventure in this level, you find yourself soaring across the sky. Take the magic carpet away from Pidgit to get to the other side of the chasm. Later, when the going gets rough, use Bombs. That makes a big difference.

Ride on a Flying Carpet

Be patient and wait for Pidgit floating in the air to make its way to you. Moving carelessly can cause you to fall off the cliff. You will be okay if you get on top of Pidgit’s head. You don’t have to land on the middle. Control the carpet with the Control Pad after you toss Pidgit out of the way.

Entering Sub-Space

Aim and throw the Magic Potion between the two jars right after you fly over the chasm. Once you enter Sub-Space, you find the first Mushroom hidden in this stage.

Pots Instead of Pipes

Press Down on the Control Pad while standing on top of a jar to slide down into it. Find a 1-Up in the first jar. What luck!

Escape from Phanto

Pressing Down while standing on the second pot sends you to an area with a Key at the end of it. If you take the Key, a malicious mask named Phanto comes after you in hot pursuit. Tenacious as he is, he continues his chase after you get out of the jar—what a nasty bad guy! Don’t worry: if you put the Key down on the ground, Phanto goes away. Don’t press your luck in a tight situation. If need be, drop the Key for a moment to catch your breath.

Using Bombs Effectively

The majority of the items you find in the caves of this area are Bombs. Use them wisely.

Perfect Bomb

Placement

Destroy the wall near the top of the ladder using two Bombs (you’ll find the Bombs under the nearest clumps of grass). This is the simplest way to ensure that you can reach the cave’s hidden Mushroom. Just throw down the Magic Potion and drop through the newly created hole!

Do the Little Boss Toss

The Little Boss in this area is none other than Birdo herself. You know how to handle her. It’s a sure win!

World 1-3

This is the last stage of World 1. The level begins with a horizontal scroll, changes to a vertical scroll, and then goes back to the horizontal scroll. While in the vertical scroll, you can’t open the door far below unless you get the Key from the top room. Remember this while you move; without this step, you can’t succeed.

Cross the River

Are you ready for consecutive log rides and lots of waterfalls in a row to keep you hopping? This is the toughest log jumping you’ve faced yet. And each one is more difficult than the last, so get rolling!

Choices

You should encounter two Magic Potions before you head underground. There are two ways to use the second Potion, so you’ve got an important choice to make. If you want to find another Mushroom, head back across the river to the left, climb up to the top of the large hill, and enter Sub-Space to collect your prize.

If you’d rather use the Potion to access a handy shortcut, keep moving right and toss it near the jar at the end of the area. If you enter Sub-Space and head down into the jar, you’ll be warped straight to World 4!

Finding the Key

When you make it to the long, vertical corridor, climb up instead of heading down. At the top of the corridor is a door that leads to a Key room. Grab the Key and dodge the Phanto attacks while heading to the bottom of the corridor. Unlock the door and step through.

Final Battle to Clear World 1

It takes three Bombs to put Mouser in his place. Throw or place the Bombs so Mouser is nearby when they explode!
