Nintendo Playing with Power eGuide Super Mario Bros. 2

Welcome to Subcon

Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Toadstool have found the strange dreamworld of Subcon, where they jump, run, and use Vegetables to defeat enemies. To make it through the seven worlds of Subcon, you must learn many special techniques. To play well, you must practice, practice, and practice some more. Good luck with your new adventures!

The Dynamics of Jumping

You played Super Mario Bros., so you know how to jump with the best of them, right? Wrong! Super Mario Bros. 2 changes things up with the Power Squat Jump. Let’s go over each jump here to get you up to speed.

A Jump on the Spot

While Mario and friends are motionless, press the A Button. They jump up and down in one spot, and not very high. This can be helpful at times, but it’s best to learn a few other tricks.

Running Jump

Press A while running, and you get a higher jump than when Mario and the others simply stand still. It’s a good way to escape enemies and get over obstacles.

Power Squat Jump

This is the game changer. A Power Squat Jump takes Mario and friends to new heights. Hold Down on the Control Pad until your character begins to flash. If you press the A Button at this point, you make the highest jump yet!

Master the Basics

Mario’s got a new repertoire of moves this time around. Jumping on enemies no longer defeats them; you’ve gotta use what’s lying around to take down these mysterious Subcon foes. Read on to learn the tricks of the trade.

Run and Jump

Control your character’s movements by using a combination of A, B, and the Control Pad. To jump, press the A Button. To increase your speed and hightail it away from danger, hold the B Button to run. It takes a bit of practice, but you’ll get the moves down eventually.

Without items, all the characters move at the same speed. When carrying items, each character assumes a different speed.
Overcome difficulties by using the three techniques. Mario’s motto: When it doubt, jump!

Pick Up Items and Throw Them

Mario and his friends may be in a strange land, but they are quick to find lots of handy survival tactics. This group of heroes is tough, and they are at their toughest when you use the B Button. With the B Button, they pull up the red grass to reveal Vegetables, or pick up enemies. Throw either at another enemy to take it out.

You can use the majority of items you pick up along the way as weapons with which to attack enemies.
Stay right on the target and Press B. Practice, and you’ll be pulling trick shots in no time!

Defeating Wart’s Entourage

The World of Dreams consists of seven worlds. Each world has three areas, except for the seventh. Most areas feature a Little Boss at the end. When a Little Boss is defeated, you can collect the crystal ball and proceed through the gate to the next area. You have three chances to continue from the first area of the world you were last on.

Earth Shakes

The most powerful weapon in your Subcon arsenal is the POW Block, which blasts away enemies with its pow-pow-pow-power!

Lift Enemies

Defeat enemies by throwing them into other enemies. First, jump on top of the enemy and lift it with ease.

Slide and Hit

Defeat as many enemies as possible while you are in hot pursuit of a Turtle Shell.

Explode!

Bombs can be found to destroy walls and attack enemies. Learn the timing of these explosive goodies and use it to your advantage.

Vegetables

Fight your enemies with Vegetables. Simply pull them up from the ground and throw them at the bad guys.

Items That Help Mario and His Friends

As you work your way through the dangers of the World of Dreams, you discover 16 items. Some of them help you get the best of your enemies. Others are handy for restoring your character’s life or moving the characters to more advantageous places. The appearance of items might change in each world, but the effectiveness is the same. Check out any unfamiliar item you come across in the course of your adventures. Give it a test run to see what it can do for you.

Sprout

This vegetable is not completely ripe yet, which means you can only use it to attack the enemy. But, to that end, it works wonders!

Vegetables

Ah, a ripe Vegetable. You can use it to attack. After pulling out a fifth Vegetable, a Stopwatch appears.

Stopwatch

Stopwatch stops all enemy movements for a brief amount of time.

Mushroom Block

Throw it to attack enemies, use it as a lid, or stack them to reach high locations!

Bomb

It will flash and explode within a few seconds after you pick it up. Use it mainly to destroy walls. Careful handling is a must!

Shells

When you throw a shell, it glides on the surface of the ground and crashes into enemies.

Cherries

Starman appears when you find enough Cherries, which are scattered randomly around an area.

Starman

Collect five Cherries to cause a Starman to appear. Touch it to become temporarily invincible.

Heart

It appears when you defeat multiple enemies. When you get one, you can refill your Life Meter by one.

Mushroom

It appears only when you enter a “Sub-Space” at a particular spot. Can you find it?

1-Up

This is especially helpful. Reach out and catch or pick it up, and it gives you a new life.

Magic Potion

Throw the Magic Potion to create a door to the subspace.

Key

A Key, of course, unlocks a door. You can also throw Keys to attack enemies.

POW Block

Throwing a POW Block creates an earthquake, which eliminates all the enemies on the ground.

Coin

All grass you pull up in Sub-Space turns into Coins. Use these Coins at the Bonus Chance stage.

Rocket

Pulling up grass in certain spots reveals Rockets, which are capable of taking your character to different places.
