Madden NFL 17 eGuide Madden Ultimate Team

What Is Madden Ultimate Team?

Madden Ultimate Team, or “MUT” as it’s known to its players, puts together some of the most fun and addictive features of video gaming and football. If you have ever dreamed of throwing a Hail Mary from today’s best quarterbacks to the NFL’s greatest receivers of the past, or fantasized of having NFL Legends like Deion Sanders or Ronnie Lott line up in your secondary, Madden Ultimate Team is the Madden experience you’re looking for!

Do you like Fantasy Football and the idea of building a winning team? Do you like opening packs of items to accelerate your line up, use a live auction house to buy and sell your items for in game currency, or even collect your items in sets for more players, packs, or in-game currency? MUT has all of these things and more!

Madden Ultimate Team is packed with sets, solo challenges, and a complete multiplayer H2H Events mode, which lets players challenge their friends’ Ultimate Team for ultimate bragging rights! Ultimate Team also provides live content to keep things fresh. With Madden Ultimate Team, the football season never ends.

MUT Highlights

Solo Challenges, the most played game type in Madden, have been improved. Last year saw the addition of dynamic start conditions where you could start in the middle of a game or late in a game. This year, Madden also features dynamic end conditions, as well as bonus goals that can grant rewards. So if a challenge has an end condition of scoring a rushing touchdown, as soon as you do that as a player, the challenge ends make solo challenges a quicker more exciting experience!

Chemistry is back and has been completely remade. It’s much more flexible and dynamic than in the past or in comparison with last season’s Style. Chemistry rating boosts appear in blue on the lineup screen and in detail on the back of each item. The requirements to activate each Chemistry and Chemistry rating bonuses are also much more flexible than past iterations. So for instance, a simple run block Chemistry might require two linemen with that Chemistry to activate and give a bonus to their strength; but a deeper “Legion of Boom” Chemistry will require a specific player from the Seattle Seahawks defense to activate even more dynamic rating boosts.

H2H Events has replaced H2H Seasons in Madden Ultimate Team and is similar to Salary Cap Ranked and Draft Champions Ranked Events that cost Ranked Tickets to enter. Contracts are no longer consumed for H2H Events. A leaderboard based on much more competitive dynamics past “coin total” is a great place to show off your H2H MUT prowess.

Alternate Uniforms return to MUT better than ever, including rarely seen CFM relocation uniforms. This changes MUT from having only the base NFL uniforms to choose from, and vastly expands options available for players to customize their teams.

Trade Block has returned fully intact to trade items with your friends. A community favorite is back!

Finally, a new Message of the Day will keep you up to date in game on all the happenings in Madden Ultimate Team!

MUT 17 Chemistry Deep Dive

Let’s dive in and discuss one of the major features in Madden Ultimate Team—Chemistry!

Chemistry Again?

The term “Chemistry” is not a new one to Madden Ultimate Team, but everything you once knew about it can be thrown out the window. So what is Chemistry now? Chemistry replaces Style in Madden NFL 17 and serves as a powerful way to build your MUT lineups. Player items have the opportunity to have a Chemistry (and possibly more than one) and when combined with other Player Items with the same Chemistry, will turn on attribute boosts. But wait, how is this any better than what Style does now?

That question can be answered in multiple ways but let’s start with our favorite aspect: you will see EXACTLY what these boosts do to your player’s attributes.

If you activate a Chemistry that boosts your team by +2 Block Shedding, each Item updates the players Block Shedding rating to reflect the new value. And if the boost from the Chemistry is enough to increment that player’s OVR rating, that also updates—and your Team Rating could improve, as well!

No more guessing. No more assuming that a boost is affecting attributes. No more amazingly fantastical online theories to reverse-engineer how much boost is being received. It’s all right there in front of you.

Another reason to get so excited about Chemistry is the flexibility this new system carries with it. Last year, players were chained to eight Styles and each one of those Styles affected only two ratings. In Madden NFL 17, Chemistry quite literally has infinite possibilities. The game launched with over 10 Chemistries and there will be more on the way!

Chemistry 101

Since we kind of dove right in and immediately feasted on dessert, let’s take a step back and talk about some of the nuts and bolts that go into creating a lineup with Chemistry. This might and should feel somewhat familiar to veteran MUT players, but there are some differences in Madden NFL 17.

We’ll start with a hypothetical example. Madden Ultimate Team has a Chemistry called “The Route Tree.” This Chemistry adds +3 Route Running to your wide receivers and tight ends. To activate it, this Chemistry requires you to collect at least five Player Items with “The Route Tree” Chemistry icon. Once you have the players and want to turn this Chemistry on, you must do two things in the lineup screen: make these players your starters and play them in their designated position. Players who are playing out of position (i.e., a right tackle playing left tackle) will not count toward your Chemistry.

Here’s the list of positions considered as “starters” toward Chemistry. Again backups, will not count:

  • HB1
  • FB1
  • WR1
  • WR2
  • WR3
