Position 5
Mobile QB
The mobile quarterback is a great opposition for the quick acting defensive mechanics that have been implemented into Madden NFL 17. There are many instances when the defensive line will break through your offensive line and you’ll need to leave the pocket. A Mobile QB can take advantage of both the short pass plays and the new ball carrier mechanics to get out of trouble and possibly gain a few yards amidst the mayhem.
Position 4
Balanced MLB
This season, Madden has improved the way that your players utilize zone coverage. A balanced MLB will not only be able to play the edge successfully, but with his good Play Recognition rating he can also shift his position or make a move toward stopping the offense. Defense is fun this year; there are greater options as you take control of the run game. Use his speed and RAC to take the ball carrier down fast, preventing the other team from even getting close to the red zone.
Position 3
Playmaker FS
The playmaker in the backfield is a great asset to the team when it comes to holding the edge. Play the zone coverage with this player type and make sure nothing in the air reaches the opposing WR’s hands. This playmaker can cover most, if not all, of the passing game, but also hit the ball carrier or receiver with both his speed and hit power to shake the ball loose. Use the new defensive mechanics this season to make sure the opposing team is afraid to pass the ball, making pass rushing one of the most fun pieces of the game.
Position 2
Red Zone Threat WR
As we have already described a few times in this guide, the zone defense has been immensely improved this season. This is what makes the Red Zone Threat WR an incredibly important position to have on the roster. Playing the short game and running slant in the red zone is very effective. Use his Play Recognition and Catching rating to run risky but effective plays to put points on the board whenever you’re in the red zone.
Position 1
Power Back HB
The position type that takes this season’s Madden NFL to the max is the Power Back HB. This player utilizes the improved mechanics extremely well. If you learn to master them, you should have no problem developing the Power Back HB into an all star. The ability to run up the middle and take down most defenders in your way is huge. Use the stiff arm when running the pitch as your power back can break most high level tackles and hold on to the ball during most situations.
