During “Path to the Mountain,” Kratos and Atreus meet their first Ogre as it busts through the door between the Foothills and the base of the Mountain. The beast is big and strong, but its attacks are slow and telegraphed. His long arms give his melee attacks great range, which can make evading them tougher than with other enemies. Hit the Ogre in its head just before or after it attacks to break its momentum.
Ogres are typically joined by other enemies, which works well with Kratos’ stun grab. Avoid the Ogre’s powerful attacks and work in melee attacks when possible, while Atreus peppers the foe with arrows until it becomes stunned. At that point, perform a stun grab on the vulnerable foe to mount the creature. Use light and heavy attacks to beat on the defenseless Ogre, or simply steer it into other enemies to attack with its flailing arms.
There are numerous Ogres around the Norse realms, and they all have similar fighting styles. With their lumbering melee attacks, and ability to use a smaller enemy as a projectile, they can destroy Kratos in no time if left unchecked. Read up on our coverage of the first Ogre in the Foothills in the “Path to the Mountain” chapter of The Journey.
In-Game Tips: “This Ogre has a very quick tell before he attacks. Father can use that to get out of the way.”
“Father is strong enough to block one of his attacks, but it takes some time for him to recover. Smarter to avoid it altogether.”

The Fierce Ogre is similar to the standard Ogre, but capable of powerful, long-distance leaps that can propel it right into a sudden slam attack. It also possesses the ability to rip a big boulder out of the ground and fling it at you. Be sure to evade the projectile, or Kratos becomes dazed for a few seconds. When in close, watch for a red flash that indicates an attempt to grab Kratos. Dodge roll away from the beast to avoid taking huge damage.
Due to the beast’s ability to tear through Kratos’ health, avoid spending too much time directly in front of the creature. Instead, fight from distance, or work your way behind it. Use Runic Attacks and Rage Mode whenever available to deal with the powerful enemy, and keep Atreus’ arrows flying. Just like the standard Ogre, the Fierce Ogre can be mounted once stunned, and used against other foes.
In-Game Tips: “If Father can goad an Ogre into using their jump smash, it’ll take them a couple of moments to recover if they miss. I just hope they miss.”
“Getting behind any Ogre is a good opportunity to do some damage. But if they turn and see him, they’ll definitely attack.”
