God of War Guide › The Enemy Hordes › Fodder and Grunts

Nightmare

Ice and Gloom Nightmares

Two other variants of Nightmares are covered elsewhere in this Bestiary. The Ice Nightmare is a Hel-Walker creature, so you’ll find it listed in the Hel-Walker section. Likewise, the Gloom Nightmare is a Dark Elf creature, so look for it listed in our Dark Elves section.

Power Level Growth

Increased aggressiveness and status effects

Unique Elite Enhancement

Increased damage and gains a new kamikaze divebomb attack like the Exploding Nightmare

A Nightmare typically flies out of reach of your melee attacks, while launching poisonous projectiles at its target. An axe throw or Atreus’ arrows are usually enough to knock the little foes out of the air. This at least allows you to reach them more easily with melee attacks. Nightmares are extremely nimble flyers, so quickly throw Leviathan once you have it in your sights.

Kratos’ Blades of Chaos are quite effective against all Nightmares, allowing you to weaponize the fliers. Aim at a Nightmare and press R1 to impale and pull it in. You have a moment to aim before Kratos tosses the Nightmare forward, which detonates upon impact.

In-Game Tips: “These Nightmares come after me and try to take me out of the fight, but Father can stop them. Hopefully he will…”

“We can either dodge their shots, or interrupt them with an arrow or axe throw. The stronger ones can shoot faster.”

Exploding Nightmare

Seiðr

Weaknesses

Weak to Shock, Stun and Rage

Power Level Growth

Increased aggressiveness

Unique Elite Enhancement

Increased damage

These Nightmares like to swarm in close before exploding. Quickly take these nuisances out from range with a quick axe throw or Atreus’ arrows. Otherwise, their explosion can cause serious harm.

In-Game Tips: “As soon as they start charging us, just one hit to their body will blow them up. The explosion hurts other enemies, too! Could be useful when fighting a big group.”

“If they get too close to us, they’ll explode. We need to hit them at range.”

Fire Nightmare

Power Level Growth

Increased aggressiveness and status effects

Unique Elite Enhancement

Increased damage and gains a new kamikaze divebomb attack like the Exploding Nightmare

Fire Nightmares are similar to other Nightmares, except they shoot fireballs. Hit them with a quick axe throw, or use the blades to grab and fling them like a bomb. Listen for Atreus’ warnings, or watch of threat indicators that signify an incoming fire projectile.

In-Game Tips: “Using the R2 axe throw will freeze them and bring them down to earth.”

“My arrows can stun them which will allow Father to finish them off. If he grabs them when stunned, he can throw them at other enemies and they’ll explode!”

Nightmare Parasite

Faction

Seiðr

Class

Fodder

Strengths

N/A

Weaknesses

Weak to Shock, Stun and Rage

Power Level Growth

Increased aggressiveness

Unique Elite Enhancement

Increased damage

This variant of Nightmare dives into other enemy creatures and “possesses” them, imbuing the possessed with added strength. Once that enemy is killed or stunned, the Nightmare Parasite flies out of its host. Eliminate it before it’s able to take over another foe.

In-Game Tips: “These Nightmares try their hardest to possess other enemies, making those enemies a lot stronger.”

“If we stun or kill a possessed enemy, it will force the possessing Nightmare out of their body.”
