Rabid Wolves are fought very early in the game, before you leave the Wildwoods. Their rabid state causes them to attack on sight. Their most dangerous attack, a lunging bite, is fairly easy to spot and can be evaded by stepping to the side. Follow up with an axe combo to make short work of them. The lunging bite can also be blocked, though Kratos is pushed back in the process.
Stay on the move and be ready to quickly evade their attacks with a dodge roll. If a Wolf gets ahold of Kratos, mash on the Circle button to toss the beast away.
In-Game Tips: “Wolves typically hunt in packs and will try to surround their prey. Father should try to keep them in front of him and let me help draw their attention.”
“When these Wolves howl, we should be ready for a strong attack.”

The Poison Wolf, as its name suggests, regurgitates and spits globs of poison that form puddles noxious to the touch. Otherwise, they’re identical to the Rabid Wolves. Avoid making contact with the poison while taking them down.
In-Game Tips: “We’ll have to be extra careful not to step in the stuff they vomit up. It’s poisonous. Smells real bad, too.”
“The poison from these Wolves makes attacking up close risky. My bow and Father’s axe throw are safer ways to take them down.”
