The kingdom of Hytopia is under the curse of a wicked witch known only as “The Lady”. The kingdom’s princess, known far and wide for her impeccable fashion sense, is the victim of The Lady’s greatest curse. Her father, King Tuft, has been feverishly looking for three legendary and stylish heroes to help break the curse, which is where Tri Force Heroes begins.
There are a few things you need to know before you truly set off on your adventure. Read on to learn a few important details about the game.
Magical Materials
At the Level Selection screen you’ll see information for what Materials can be found and what Sub-Weapons are available. Materials allow you to make Outfits that can be used during levels. You won’t have enough Materials to make any Outfits right now and you’ll start your first level with only two Outfits: The Hero’s Tunic, which does nothing but keep you looking like a true hero, and the Bear Minimum Outfit, which removes a Heart Container when it is worn and makes the player wearing it take double damage.
Never Say Die!
One last thing before heading off into the Drablands: For any level, with friends or Doppels, you can die (empty all of your Heart Containers) up to three times. When you die, a Fairy will come out and revive you with full health at the start of whatever room you died in. If this happens more than three times, you’ll be booted back to the lobby and forced to start the level all over again.
While in single-player, neither of your Doppels will take damage while not in your control. But in multiplayer, anyone can take damage and your health is shared, so be extra careful! Heart Containers can empty incredibly fast if you and your two friends get in a tricky situation.
And So Our Story Begins…
Your Link can be seen reading the notice board in town, though we’re not the only ones who see him. A young green-haired boy, catches Link reading the sign and races down to meet him. It turns out that the boy works for Hytopia’s resident fashion designer, Madame Couture. The boy suggests that you take a trip over to Madame Couture’s, just north of your current location, to get a much-needed makeover. But we’re rebels here, and we’re going to ignore that request.
Instead, head north and cross the bridge. You’ll be stopped by the guard at the entrance of Hytopia castle. He’ll give you a quick once-over to see if you have what it takes to be one of the legendary stylish heroes that legend tells will save Hytopia from the witch’s curse. He’ll let you pass to go speak with Hytopia’s resident witch-hunting commander, Sir Combsly, inside the castle foyer. Sir Combsly will explain Hytopia’s predicament in a bit more detail and request that Link take up arms against the wicked witch. Accept his request (not that he really gives you a choice) and Sir Combsly will ask you to name yourself and he will give you your first Material: Hytopian Silk. This Material can, and must, be used to create the Hero’s Tunic. Sir Combsly won’t let you step foot into the Drablands without it!
Now head out of the castle, cross the bridge, head down the stairs and then hang another left at the fountain to reach Madame Couture’s boutique.
Consider Madame Couture your new best friend, because she’s going to be the most helpful person in aiding you in your quest to defeat The Lady. She’s in the business of making magical Outfits that grant their wearers new abilities and powers. As your quest carries you through the Drablands, you’ll discover more Materials. Bring these Materials back to Madame Couture regularly and she’ll turn them into Outfits.
Have Madame Couture make you the Hero’s Tunic, then return to Sir Combsly. He’ll grant you access to the Drablands by allowing you enter either the multiplayer or single-player lobbies. If you’re playing with friends, head through the door above Sir Combsly. (The door is marked with three “person” symbols to indicate that it is a three-player room.)
In order to play multiplayer, you’ll need two other players to join you. The main quest is either for one player or three. If you’re hankering for some multiplayer, but only have one other player with you, you can head down the stairs on the right side of the room and enter the Coliseum. You’ll be able to battle one or two other Links for Coliseum-exclusive Materials, Rupees, and bragging rights. But we’re getting side-tracked.
In the multiplayer lobby, you’ll need to speak with the old man in the top-left corner of the room. One of you will need to select “Host a Room” while the other two players select “Join a Room”. Once all three players are in, the Triforce gateway at the north end of the room will light up and you’ll be good to go! Have each player step on a piece of the Triforce gateway and you’ll be moved to the Level Selection screen (Unless you’re playing an online game, which will require you to choose the area you want to play in before you join a room). You’ll only have access to one world at this point, but you’re free to choose any level you want in that world.
If you’re playing single-player, you’ll need to head through the door north-east of Sir Combsly. (It will be marked with a single “person” symbol to show you that this is for one player.) Getting single-player started up is almost identical to starting multiplayer. Talk to the Doppel Master in the top-left corner of the room. Since you don’t have two other Links to join you in your quest, the Doppel Master will lend you wooden dolls called Doppels. Link is able to transfer his spirit to either of the dolls at any time in order to take control of them. You can take control of the Doppels by tapping their image on the touchscreen. Once you’re ready, you can pick up or control each Doppel and move them onto a piece of the Triforce gateway. Once all three of you are on the Triforce gateway, you’ll be moved to the Area Selection screen.
Now that you’re ready, select your level and let’s get this witch hunt underway! We’ll be starting with 1-1 Deku Forest.
