Show Some Muscle

Conroy is less than impressed by Wei, and he sics one of his men on him. This is the start of the Counter tutorial. It’s quite simple: Enemies who are highlighted in red are attacking. Press the Counter button at the moment before an attack lands to intercept it and Strike the enemy in return. Eventually, Conroy and another thug join in on the hazing. Concentrate on Countering. Eventually, a timer pops up, telling you to survive for thirty more seconds. Soon enough, Dogeyes Lin approaches, along with another group of his thugs. Winston walks out of the restaurant to investigate the commotion, and after a tense verbal confrontation, Dogeyes leaves. Furious, Winston orders Wei and Jackie to the Night Market to collect protection money from the vendors—and to make an example out of anyone who crosses them.

Follow Jackie into the Night Market. During his little chat, you will pass an energy drink vendor and a food vendor. You have some money that you start with, so consider spending some of it on these vendors now. The extra boost can help for the fights coming up.

The first vendor you’re paying a visit to, Joey Kwan, is a seller of pirated DVDs. Extortion is as simple as walking up to him and pressing the prompted button. Joey is very reasonable and quickly hands over the money without any real fuss. Follow Jackie down the steps into the next section of the Night Market.

The second vendor is a little less cooperative. He’s got a flunky close by who tries to show you the way out. Make an example out of him by using the nearby telephone booth. The watch vendor will see reason.

The produce vendor you visit next has a bigger attitude problem, probably built up by the fact that he’s got a half dozen of Dogeyes’ goons at his beck and call. This is your first fight against multiple aggressive opponents, and it’s not to be taken lightly. They will try to surround you and Jackie, and they don’t all wait their turn conveniently to strike. Use environmental Grapples and Counters freely, and aim to be as brutal as possible. Remember, you gain Triad points for being more violent in combat, as well as for avoiding taking damage. Once the thugs are taken down, collect from the produce vendor.

The butcher you’re to collect from next is having troubles of his own. Members from Dogeyes’ crew are beating on him, demanding payment. As before, watch for opportunities for environmental Grapples, and punish these idiots as harshly as possible for daring to screw around in Winston’s Night Market. The butcher is grateful for the assistance and offers his payment without any trouble.

Afterwards, Jackie insists that you get outfitted with new clothes that show your loyalty to Winston’s crew. Follow him to the clothing store. Here, you can earn your first clothing set buff by picking out the right shirt, pants, and shoes. If you picked up the Lock Boxes from earlier, this should be no problem. The Thug Set I adds 5% melee damage to Wei’s techniques.

Dressed for success, follow Jackie until you run into Conroy, who still insists on giving Wei crap for being the suspicious new guy who may or may not be an undercover cop. The mission ends after Conroy drags Jackie off to do some business.

Your first rewards screen! After every mission, side job, or favor you do for an NPC, this screen will pop up, showing what you’ve earned in terms of money, Face points, Triad points, and Cop points. The mission ends near a woman named Susan, who has a favor to ask of you.
