Weapons, Vehicles, and Clothes

Wei can evolve into the most dangerous man in the entire city by the end of the story, but having the right tools to supplement his skills always helps. You need weapons to help equalize the odds, you need the right cars and motorcycles to win the street races and beat timed events, and looking good while you shut down the Sun On Yee never hurts.

Weapons

There are two general categories of weapons in Sleeping Dogs: melee weapons and firearms. Unlike many other games that provide you with huge pockets that can hold a squad’s worth of firepower, Wei Shen can’t take every single gun or melee weapon in the game with him all at once. All weapons are meant to be used and exchanged repeatedly during combat. If your knife breaks, pick up another one or steal a lead pipe from a nearby thug. If you’re out of ammo for your pistol, disarm a goon for his ammo, or Action Vault over cover and pick up a gun as you sprint to the next safe spot. You have to be willing and able to make snap decisions during a fight, and to use whatever is in Wei’s hands proficiently if you want to survive.

Melee Weapons

There are quite a few melee weapons at your disposal throughout the game, most commonly found in the possession of a Triad member. Melee weapons change the dynamic of any hand-to-hand fight. Unless your Face Meter is filled and active, you can’t grab enemies using melee weapons. They can hit significantly harder than a typical unarmed attack, causing victims on the receiving end to reel back in pain. The most common melee weapons you will come across are knives and meat cleavers, both of which are typically in the hands of a thug. Tire irons can also be found in the trunks of many vehicles. These three weapon types can help you get through most fist fights.

You’re not at all limited to those melee weapons, though. You can pick up and use frozen fish, dropped purses and suitcases, umbrellas, shopping bags, duffel bags, and even certain power tools to take a few swings at the enemy. Most melee weapons will break or otherwise become useless after a number of attacks, though it is possible to improve their durability and attack power through specific upgrades.

Wei can only wield and store one melee weapon at a time. Running around with a weapon in public can attract the attention of the police, so be sure to store or drop obvious weapons like knives and cleavers.

Firearms

Guns are not common in Hong Kong. Historically, Triad-related violence is handled with hands, feet, and sharp blades. Even possessing a handgun illegally can result in arrest and a hefty fine. As a result, unless it’s absolutely important, most missions do not provide Wei with immediate access to guns. If you need them, you’re going to have to find them during a mission or take them from an enemy. Occasionally, you’re given a gun by an ally at the start or during the course of a mission.

There are no handy gun stores in Hong Kong. Similar to melee weapons, Wei can only use one gun at a time, and he can only safely conceal certain types of guns. You’re not going to be stuffing an Assault Rifle in your pants this time around. One of the Cop Upgrades allows Wei to access any police car’s trunk to pull out a weapon, but typically most of your firepower is made available during the missions where it’s needed most.

Guns are extremely powerful and are equally dangerous to Wei and his enemies. It’s possible for a man wielding a Shotgun to take a fully upgraded Wei down in just a few close-range shots. Likewise, you’re able to cut a swath through the enemy using precision gunfire and bullet time. There are eight types of guns in Sleeping Dogs, many of which come in different variants.

9mm Pistol

Variants: None

Your standard handgun, the 9mm Pistol lacks power, but makes up for it with precision and a high potential rate of fire. Like all other Pistols, it is fairly easy to use, and can be concealed if necessary. During bullet time, the accuracy of the 9mm can allow you to line up many quick headshots. Don’t discount the usefulness of this weapon at close- or mid-range encounters!

.50 Cal Pistol

Variants: Gold .50 Cal Pistol, Silver .50 Cal Pistol

Better described as hand cannons, the .50 Cal Pistol is not a common weapon, but when they are found, they can be used to shut down just about any goon in one or two shots. While not as accurate as the lighter Pistols, and lacking their rate of fire, the .50 Cal can still be fearsomely effective, even at longer ranges. Whereas with a 9mm you’d want to aim for headshots to quickly kill enemies, the .50 Cal can drop someone just as fast with shots to the body.

.45 Cal Pistol

Variants: With Taclight, Without Attachment

Occupying a comfortable middle ground between the 9mm and the .50 Cal Pistols, the .45 Cal shares the accuracy of its lighter cousin while adding some of the oomph from its heavier relative. The Taclight variant adds a bright flashlight underneath the barrel of the weapon, which can blind you when you’re facing one down and can reduce the firing accuracy of enemies you shine it on.

Machine Pistol

Variants: None

While causing less damage per shot than other Pistols, a Machine Pistol makes up for this by having an absurd rate of fire. You can empty a magazine incredibly fast, and anyone on the receiving end is sure to go down just as quickly. The problem with Machine Pistols is that they are much less accurate than other Pistols, which makes them best suited for short-range firefights.

.45 Cal Submachine Gun

Variants: Gold, With Taclight, Without Attachment

Providing comparable rate of fire of a Machine Pistol with the power of a .45 Cal Pistol, SMGs are a solid go-to gun for any firefight. They lag behind Assault Rifles for overall killing power, but are more common in general, making it easy to stay stocked up during a battle by collecting ammo from your fallen enemies. SMGs excel at short- and mid-range battles.

Assault Rifle

Variants: With Taclight, With Grenade Launcher, Without Attachment

Arguably the best guns you can come across in the game, Assault Rifles provide high stopping power, deadly accuracy, and a high rate of fire in one package. Any time you are faced by a group of enemies and one of them is carrying an Assault Rifle, that enemy should become a priority target, as he can bring down Wei extremely fast from just about any range. Assault Rifles are the only weapon in the game that can come with a Grenade Launcher attachment, though this usually comes as part of a story-driven event. The only thing holding back Assault Rifles is the fact that they are relatively uncommon among your Triad enemies, making it tough to stay stocked with ammo.

Pump Shotgun

Variants: None

Extremely powerful at close range, you are almost guaranteed a kill if you are close to a target when you fire a Pump Shotgun. Unfortunately, the low rate of fire means that missing a shot is a very dangerous error to make, and the wide spread of these guns makes them much less useful beyond short range.

Anti-Riot Shotgun

Variants: With Taclight, Without Attachment

When you absolutely, positively need to overkill everything within twenty feet of Wei Shen, the Anti-Riot Shotgun is here to meet that need. Sharing the power and spread of a Pump Shotgun, the Anti-Riot Shotgun is bolstered with a high rate of fire and a faster reload speed due to it being magazine fed. You can conceivably make this weapon work well outside of short range due to the sheer amount of lead you can spit into the air at an enemy, making headshots from afar almost inevitable.

Vehicles

Hong Kong is a big city. While there’s a lot you need to do on foot, being able to get around quickly is an absolute necessity. You’ll often be put in positions where you need to be somewhere fast or you’ll fail a mission, and that is where the seventy-two different vehicles (seventy-five if you count DLC) of Sleeping Dogs come into play.

You’ve got the ability to hijack or steal the vast majority of the stuff you see on the road or at the various harbors around the city. You can actually purchase twenty-eight vehicles from four different gray market dealers for storage in parking garages all around Hong Kong. Players can add another three vehicles (two cars and a motorcycle) to their collection by purchasing certain DLC packs.

All the cars you can purchase fall into four distinct classes: A-class, B-class, C-class, and D-class. Motorcycles are limited primarily to A-class and B-class, with the DLC bike alone in C-class. This determines what level of street racing the vehicles can participate in.

Just because you can make the money needed to buy a car from one of the various illicit dealers around the city doesn’t mean they’ll take your money. You need to be at the right Face level to purchase some of the really high-end rides. Later top-end cars and bikes will cost you a pretty penny, so it may be worth it to wait until you’ve picked up outfits that reduce the cost of purchases around the city. You also get a 40% discount for reaching Face level 10!

Affordable Public Transportation

You don’t always have easy access to a garage, and sometimes your missions will take you across the entire city from where you’re standing. Never, ever underestimate the power of the taxi. For a paltry fee, the many taxis roaming around Hong Kong can more or less “warp” you immediately to a garage or clothing store on the other side of town. Use this ability to help save yourself a long car trip through the whole island whenever the opportunity presents itself.

You are capable of customizing Wei Shen’s overall appearance by purchasing clothes from the thirteen different clothing stores located throughout Hong Kong. There are eight different categories of clothing items that can be combined to create a look you prefer: Torso, Pants, Shoes, Hats, Glasses, Chains, Watches, and Bracelets. Most clothing only offers aesthetic differences, but some clothing items belong to sets. When all pieces in a set are worn, you are granted a set bonus that can provide special attributes. It is possible to combine set bonuses with certain clothing pieces.

Additionally, over the course of the game you can unlock special complete preset outfits by completing specific missions. Players who download certain DLC packs will also receive new clothing articles and preset outfits. Certain outfits also provide special bonuses, but complete outfits can’t be mixed with individual clothing pieces.

The thirteen different clothing stores in the city provide unique lists of items. The charts below show you what each store offers, the prices they start at before any special discounts, the required Face level to purchase the item if applicable, and any special bonuses the clothing might offer. A separate list also shows the different full clothing sets and when they are made available.
