Prologue: Welcome to Hong Kong

Prologue: Welcome to Hong Kong

The weather sucks. The storm is kicking waves onto the docks, but life and business (legitimate or otherwise) still go on. The Hong Kong Police Department is hard at work, tracking down a dangerous criminal offender by the name of Wei Shen as he and a cohort, Naz, make their way to an illicit deal.

The contact for Wei and Naz is a heavyset man with an attitude problem that matches his general appearance. The deal seems to go off smoothly, but the HKPD officers nervously watch an unaffiliated security guard interrupt the deal. Mr. Personality decides to make an example out of the poor man with a pair of vicious slices of his meat cleaver. The HKPD makes its move in hopes of saving the guard. The deal is clearly busted. The buyer takes his cleaver and runs off by himself, while Naz and Wei make their own escape.

Welcome to the prologue of Sleeping Dogs! For the next few missions you’re going to be introduced to the basic movement and combat mechanics of the game in practical terms.

You gain control of Wei Shen as soon as the opening cutscenes are finished. Hold down the Sprint button and follow Naz as best you can. The first obstacle is a set of nets filled with fish hanging from the roof.

You eventually pass through a fish processing center, climb up a set of fish tanks, and exit out the back, only to be confronted by an HKPD SWAT member. Naz brushes past, but now the guy is aiming his gun right at you. Action Vault over the obstacle and directly into him to tackle him, then keep moving.

After climbing up to a rooftop, make another flying leap off a neon sign and land hard on a roof that collapses. Naz manages to keep running forward, but now you need to run through a small restaurant, vault over more obstacles, and head toward the flashing window at the far wall.

Escape isn’t an option though. A dozen squad cars, with officers pointing their guns at the apartment, greet Wei. Another group barrels into the apartment and confronts him from behind. Wei smartly puts his hands up and lets the police take him into custody without further incident.

In jail, Wei is reunited with a friend from his younger years in Hong Kong’s Old Prosperity projects. Jackie Ma is ecstatic to see Wei Shen once more, but the meeting is cut short, as Jackie is called by a guard to be released.

Later, Wei finds himself in an interrogation room. Here we learn Wei Shen’s true identity, that of an undercover cop. Superintendent Pendrew introduces Wei to his new handler, Raymond, who will be Wei’s primary contact in the HKPD going forward. By meeting with Jackie Ma in jail, Wei Shen has already re-established a crucial link to the Sun On Yee. Raymond has his misgivings regarding Wei Shen’s assignment to this mission, but Pendrew rebuffs him. Wei Shen is perfect for the job.
