Our First Power Moon
Cappy was able to lead the way to Cascade Kingdom by way of a Spark Pylon, but if Mario is to get any further, he’ll need an airship. And the only way to power an airship is with Power Moons. The first objective is to collect a Power Moon, the first of more than 800 that exist in Super Mario Odyssey.
Collect the coins and purple coins near Waterfall Basin and ascend the hill to the Chain Chomp. The first Power Moon is contained within the fossilized rock near the river and the only way to get it is by capturing the Chain Chomp. Bait the Chain Chomp into surging toward Mario against its chain, then quickly dodge away and capture it.
Pull the Chain Chomp opposite the glowing rocks to wind up the Chain Chomp then release the controls to send it flying in the other direction. The Chain Chomp smashes through the rocks, exposing the Power Moon. After Mario releases the capture collect Power Moon #01. Collecting the Power Moon causes the stone spire to fall, providing a bridge across the river.
Multi Moon Atop the Falls
Continue past the ancient airship and up the slope past the slumbering T-Rex and toward the Chain Chomps. Capture the Big Chain Chomp and use it to break through the stone wall beneath the arch.
Perform a spin throw near the flowers to gain a Heart then repeat the technique to knock the Burrbos from Stone Bridge. Continue collecting the Regional Coins as you round the corner toward another Big Chain Chomp and the Ancient Wall. Capture the Big Chain Chomp and use it to smash the Ancient Wall just as you did the earlier rocks.
Ancient Wall contains the first of many 8-bit levels that replicate the style and charm of the very first Super Mario Bros., released in 1985. Enter the pixelated warp pipe on the left to enter the 8-bit level. Dash and jump over the Goombas in the level as you smash the blocks and scale the cliff.
Don’t break through the top of the level just yet! First make your way left toward the tall gray rock and jump to expose an invisible block. Leap from this over the stone wall and around the corner to find Power Moon #04. Continue the ascent to Fossil Falls Heights and a return to three dimensions.
Use either Chain Chomp to smash the fossilized rocks blocking the path across the arch. If you’re having trouble getting a clear shot, pull the left-hand Chain Chomp away from the stone wall until the one nearest the wall goes idle. Ricochet one into the other to smash the blocks.
Boss: Madame Broode
Just when you thought you’ve seen the last of Chain Chomps, Madame Broode has one as a pet. Her golden Chain Chompikins is on a lengthy leash and can yank against it in an attempt to bite Mario if he’s in its path. Watch for the golden arrows on the ground and run to either side to escape its chomp.
Throw Cappy at Broode’s Chain Chomp twice, once to knock its pink hat off, and then again to capture it. Madame Broode tries to keep it close, so you’ll have to move quickly. Try to move Broode’s Chain Chomp across the arena to wind up the chain so that you can release it back into her, as you did with the stone wall earlier.
Don’t be tempted to collect the coins she drops after hitting her with the Chain Chomp. She’s going to wind her pet up and send it spinning after Mario. Keep your distance and run along the edge of the grassy hills to steer clear of it. Once it settles down, capture Broode’s Chain Chomp and hit her again just as before. Land three hits with her pet to defeat Madame Broode for Power Moon #2.
Cappy and Mario immediately make their way to the airship in the rocks. Thanks to the four additional Power Moons Mario has earned, the Odyssey can be restored. The Odyssey has enough fuel to reach the Sand Kingdom—hurry after Bowser and Peach if you want, but there’s lots still to do in Cascade Kingdom…
