1999: Super Smash Bros.™
The game that started it all, Super Smash Bros., debuted on the Nintendo 64 in 1999. It featured 12 fighters and 9 stages. It also included a 4-player Versus mode and a selection of single-player game modes.
2001: Super Smash Bros.™ Melee
Super Smash Bros. Melee was released on the Nintendo GameCube in 2001. It featured 26 fighters and 29 combat stages, as well as a variety of new game modes. It also introduced trophies for players to earn and collect.
2008: Super Smash Bros.™ Brawl
Released in 2008, Super Smash Bros. Brawl featured 39 fighters and 41 combat stages. This was the first game in the series to include third-party characters as playable fighters. It also introduced online play and a variety of new game modes.
2014: Super Smash Bros.™ for Nintendo 3DS
In 2014, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS launched with 48 fighters (51 including the three Mii Fighter classes) and 34 stages. It featured a variety of single player, multiplayer, and online game modes. Most significantly, however, this game marked the series’ debut on a handheld system.
2014: Super Smash Bros.™ for Wii U
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U was released in 2014. At launch, it featured 48 fighters (51 including the three Mii Fighter classes) and 46 combat stages. This game offered a wide variety of game modes and customization options. Additionally, it introduced amiibo functionality to the series, featuring the ability to create and train amiibo Figure Players.
