Notes Before You Go
Now, before you set off, there are a some things to keep in mind while questing. Most of these quests are meant to be played with more than one person. That doesn’t mean you can’t play them solo, but it means you’ll need to be more prepared for each quest. There are plenty of places in Appalachia that will constantly throw enemies at you. If you don’t have the means to take a beating and still press onward, go off, explore, loot, craft and level, and then try the quest again.
Pace Yourself
Which leads us to another important thing to note: patience. This looks like Fallout, sounds like Fallout, and plays like Fallout, but unlike any other Fallout entry, rushing through the main quest is ill-advised. The jump in difficulty from region to region is significant; even if you crush quests in one region, a quest in a different region will likely have devastatingly powerful enemies in it. For this reason, take your time. Focus more on exploring individual regions rather than completing the main quest. There are plenty of Daily, Event, and side quests to keep you busy in a single region for hours. Take those on, get plenty of gear, and level up before moving on.
On top of dealing with high-level enemies, you’ll also encounter quests that have you hop all over Appalachia, or quests that require very specific crafting materials without telling you specifically where to find them. These are more reasons to pace yourself. Instead of pulling your hair out looking for those crafting materials, or having to constantly head into unknown territory for a single quest objective, explore and loot and adventure. If you end up in the general vicinity of your quest objective, great! Go knock it out and get the next one going. If you stumble onto the crafting materials required for an objective, excellent! Go use those ASAP so you don’t accidentally burn them on crafting something else (a situation we are all too familiar with here).
Think of questing in Fallout 76 as a tour, rather than a train ride. There are plenty of fun things to see, but you can also explore without feeling like the quest is your de facto destination.
Read Ahead
Our last tip before we set you loose: Don’t be afraid to read ahead a bit. We’ve largely kept story bits out of this walkthrough, so it’s unlikely that you’ll turn the page and see a real SHOCKER of a plot twist right in your face. Some quests will have you coming and going from a central location. If you know this ahead of time, you can plant your C.A.M.P. somewhere near the main quest location to save yourself some caps on fast traveling.
We also suggest using the Atlas chapter for each area you explore. For these quest chapters, we’ve focused almost exclusively on getting you through each objective as smoothly as possible and have left the deep diving of each location to the Atlas. Using the Atlas at each new location will give you the information you need to find all the best loot each area has to offer.
With that, go forth! We had a great time playing through these quests and we found the story fascinating and surprising every time we played through it. Whether you’re playing by yourself or with friends, we’re sure you’re going to fall in love with Appalachia just like we did. Good luck and have fun, Vault Dweller!
