When it comes to saving your hide, Power Armor is second to none, and with storage restrictions at an all-time high, having a mechanized suit with loads of storage space simply can’t be beat. You’ll constantly have to be on the lookout for Fusion Cores, however—these suits require energy and they drink it down like a cold Nuka-Cola on a hot Appalachian summer day.
Most sets of Power Armor are found by scavenging loot off dead enemies and as random quest rewards (the Excavator set being the only exception). You can expect to complete a lot of Daily Quests and events to obtain all of the parts to most of these sets, so if you’re struggling to put a complete suit together, don’t take it personally; everyone traversing Appalachia is in the same boat.

Raider Power Armor
Your very first set of Power Armor isn’t going to turn any heads, but it will get the job done (at least until your next set). While its resistances aren’t particularly high, it will serve you well for the time you have it.

While it’s not the best of the best when it comes to Damage and Energy Resistance, if you’re heading into an uninhabitable environment, this suit will keep you safe and sound.

Jumping from the Excavator and T-45 suit to the T-51b might require a bit of consideration. If you’re thinking of visiting a highly irradiated area, you would be better off hopping back into one of the two earlier mentioned suits. But if you’re heading into a highly contested area and are expecting some fierce fighting, this walking brick wall will keep you safe and sound.

The top of the mountain as far as Energy Resistance is concerned, the X-01 Power Armor is definitely in the upper echelon for reasons beyond its level requirements. While other sets handle physical damage a good deal better, the X-01 set can tank Energy attacks like, well...a tank! If combating Scorchbeasts and radioactive anomalies is in your near future, it might be in your best interest to take this mobile panic room for a spin.

Ultracite Power Armor
While the Ultracite set of Power Armor may be the last available on the list, that doesn’t mean you can abandon every other set. The X-01 suit handles Energy-based damage much better than this one, but you can expect better physical Damage Resistance from this suit than any other.
The question on your mind might be, “Which one do I bring to a Fissure Site? Ultracite or X-01?” The truth is, it depends on what’s giving you the hardest time. Scorchbeasts use Energy attacks almost exclusively, while the Scorched that surround it will attack you with physical damage attacks. If you find that Scorchbeasts are roughing you up the most, then consider the X-01, but Ultracite will work just fine in all other situations.
