There are a total of 13 maps to choose from in your Matchmaking playlists. It is imperative that you use this guide to learn the layouts of each one and how you (or your team) can control them during games. There are three Forge maps (Erosion, Impact, and Ravine) and three default variations of them (Ascent, Relay, and Settler); six larger maps (Complex, Exile, Longbow, Meltdown, Ragnarok, and Vortex); and four small to medium maps (Abandon, Adrift, Haven, and Solace).
For each map, we provide a cartographical overview, which we further overlay with weapon drops and other helpful data. The map overview is also sectioned into different areas known as “hot spots,” which have a name and tactical note; use this name to inform your teammates that you’re moving or fighting in a particular hot spot. We also cover what to expect or do when you head into one of these areas. Finally, we provide additional strategic notes, usually regarding the usual game types played on the map in question.
Hot Spots: What’s in a Name?
Every map has been divided up into several hot spots. Each one has its own name (such as “Blue Base” or “Broken Bridge”), and most are named due to their features. Others (such as “Mohawk”) are named because the hot spot is shaped like a particular object. And others (such as “Blue Cave” and “Top Jerk”) have evolved through gameplay and easy associations. For example, “Top Jerk” refers to a rooftop location and the type of person who’s camping out and sniping from the roof. Use these words when telling your teammates where you are or where to push or defend. The hot spots were named so they’re easily remembered and heard during matches, but feel free to call any area anything you wish.
Hot Spots: What’s in an Icon?
Many of the hot spots across a map have an icon after their name. There are four types, and all refer to the type of activity you should expect (and sometimes avoid) at each area:
Choke hot spot: Expect high traffic, numerous enemies, and a well-used thoroughfare. Combat usually occurs here, and the location may be watched by enemy snipers.
Danger hot spot: This is an area of ground that is difficult to defend, has poor visibility for shooting angles, is sunken or low to the ground, or is in the open. Expect to be shot at if you’re here. Avoid if possible.
Mirrored hot spot: This location features an identical (or mostly identical) facsimile, almost always on the opposite side of the map. Expect tactical advice to be the same for both locations. Usually these are “blue” and “red” variants of a hot spot.
Sniper hot spot: This location is excellent for sniping, as it has numerous angles and views across much of the map. Expect long-range fire from these areas.
