How to Befriend Yo-kai

Generally speaking, there are two ways to make friends with Yo-kai. You’ll automatically befriend some of them as part of the main story. At other times, you’ll use Watch Mode to find Yo-kai—or simply run into them in back alleys and other dark places—and then defeat them in battle to befriend them. You may also befriend Yo-kai in certain sub-quests or Yo-kai Spots, but that doesn’t happen as often.

It’s a matter of luck whether a Yo-kai will befriend you after battle. You’ll boost your chances if you give the Yo-kai its favorite food.

You can give your own personal nicknames to the Yo-kai that befriend you.

Medals: The Yo-kai Wheel and the Medallium

When a Yo-kai befriends you, it gives you a special Medal as a symbol of friendship. Use these Medals to summon the Yo-kai into battle. You can carry up to six Medals at once, which are placed in the six slots of your Yo-kai Wheel. This becomes your active party—the Yo-kai that fight your battles.

Once you’ve filled the six Medal slots in your Yo-kai Wheel, any other Medals you collect are stored in the pages of your Yo-kai Medallium. These form your reserve force. You can swap them into the Wheel, but only in the special places mentioned on the next page.

Duplicate Yo-kai

Acquire up to six duplicates of the same Yo-kai if you like. Indeed, some Yo-kai become more powerful if you possess multiples of the same type. However, the more duplicates of a Yo-kai you befriend, the less likely that you befriend that type of Yo-kai again. Acquiring six of the same Yo-kai might require some serious patience!

Choose Six Yo-kai to Accompany You

Yo-kai Medals are added to your collection in the order that you befriend your Yo-kai pals. The first six Medals go into your Yo-kai Wheel, and those new friends become your active party. Once you accumulate more than six Medals, the extras are automatically stored in your Yo-kai Medallium as reserve Medals. Be sure to check the stats and abilities of any new Yo-kai that you befriend. Then, switch Medals between the Medallium and your six active slots to create the strongest team available.

Open the Main Menu to get a quick top-screen look at the six Yo-kai friends currently in your active team.

Check up on all your Yo-kai friends. Use the L/R buttons to change the Sort order and make searching easier. You can sort your collected Yo-kai by Name, Rank, Level, Tribe, and other categories.

How to Swap Medals: Your Room and Eyepo

Unfortunately, you can’t just move Medals in and out of your Yo-kai Wheel’s active team whenever you like. To do that, you have two options:

Use the Yo-kai Medallium on the floor of your main character’s bedroom.

Use the glowing Eyepo creatures that you can find in convenience stores, post offices, banks, and a few other places.

The Yo-kai Medallium lies on the floor in your main character’s bedroom. All of the reserve Medals you collect are stored in it.

This ball of flame with an eye is an Eyepo. Use this odd creature to swap Medals between your Medallium reserve and your Yo-kai Wheel’s active party. The Eyepo also fully replenishes the HP and Soul Meters of all your Yo-kai friends.

How Yo-kai Order Affects Battle

The six Yo-kai in your Yo-kai Wheel are displayed in a circle. The three on top form the front line that fights in battles. The bottom three form the rear line, which starts battle in standby mode. You can reposition your Yo-kai within the Wheel anytime you like outside of battle. Once the battle starts, you can rotate the Wheel, but you can’t change the order. Think carefully about where to place your active Yo-kai on the Wheel for maximum effectiveness.

The Formation Effect: Tribal Cousins Fight Better Together!

If you place two Yo-kai from the same tribe next to each other in your Yo-kai Wheel’s front line, the alignment can trigger a stat-boosting Formation Effect. Line up three tribemates across the top for an even more powerful effect!
