Spec Ops

Spec Ops

Swift operator that makes up for lack of weapon punch with a compliment of tools, like thermal ISR (Intelligence, Reconnaissance, and Surveillance) vision, which can detect targets through obstacles.

Performance

  • Sidearm: G23
  • Grenade: M67 Frag

Support Actions

Level Points Req. Offensive Defensive
1 400 Radar Jammer Smoke Screen
2 900 120mm Dragon Fire Fireteam Replenish
3 1,500 A-10 Warthog RQ-7 Shadow
4 2,300 Apache Pilot Apache Pilot

The spec ops class is fast and nimble, perfect for staging raids on enemy held-positions, using their signal scan ability to gain the upper hand. The submachine guns (SMGs) offered by this class have amazingly high rates of fire, but lack accuracy and stopping power at ranges beyond 20 meters. As a result, spec ops soldiers are at a serious disadvantage when engaging opponents at intermediate to long ranges. For this reason, always avoid areas with long sight lines, such as streets or long alleyways—you won’t win a duel against a sniper or assaulter soldier in these wide-open spaces. Instead, move through buildings and other tight spaces where the SMG can chew up targets at close range. Like the assaulter, the spec ops class is equipped with two M67 fragmentation grenades. These grenades are perfectly suited for the close-quarters engagements the spec ops soldier is designed for. While moving through structures, use the signal scan ability to locate enemies and then deploy grenades by banking them off walls or through doorways. This allows you to engage enemies without exposing yourself to incoming fire. For best results, cook the grenades to give your opponents little time to run away.

Class Ability: Signal Scan

Of all the class abilities, signal scan is the most unique, giving the spec ops soldier a brief glimpse of nearby enemies. This ability detects the heat signatures of nearby enemy troops, briefly appearing as red silhouettes on the HUD. While the ability is only active for a couple of seconds, it’s more than enough time to spot enemies hiding behind walls and other pieces of cover. Once you’ve identified enemy positions, it’s much easier to plan your attack or call in an offensive support action. Signal scan has a rather limited range, allowing you to only detect enemy heat signatures within approximately a 50-meter radius. But since the spec ops soldier usually operates in tight, confined spaces, signal scan’s range is usually more than sufficient for dealing with immediate threats. Upon spawning into a match, signal scan isn’t available—it must charge for a few seconds before it can be activated. Likewise, after each use, signal scan requires a recharging period before it can be used again. The high-pitched tone emitted by this ability can be heard by teammates and opponents alike. If you hear this sound, it’s a good indication that an enemy spec ops soldier is nearby and that your location has been compromised—be ready to move out!

Unique Support Actions

Radar Jammer

Support Action Points: 400

This sneaky device emits an electromagnetic pulse that scrambles the minimap display of all nearby opponents. This is a great way to counter UAVs deployed by the opposing team, allowing your teammates to remain undetected as long as they stay within the jammer’s range. When defending during Combat Mission or Hotspot, consider deploying these devices near the objective in an effort to remain concealed. Once activated, it takes a few seconds to deploy this device on the ground, so make sure your fireteam buddy or a teammate is nearby to provide cover. Jammers deployed by the opposing team can be destroyed—just shoot them.

120mm Dragon Fire

Support Action Points: 800

Of all the artillery-based offensive support actions, this one is the most impressive, raining down massive mortar rounds on the designated target area. When activated, the strike is initiated by designating the target area through a pair of binoculars. As usual, don’t attempt to initiate a strike until you’re certain your flanks are clear of opponents—have a buddy stand guard to watch your back while you designate the target. Like the sniper’s Rocket Artillery, use this support action in wide-open areas where the incoming rounds have plenty of overhead clearance. Mortar rounds that explode on rooftops or trees do no damage to opponents on the ground.

A-10 Warthog

Support Action Points: 1,500

Watching an A-10 conduct a low-altitude strafing run never gets old, especially when you’re the one scoring all the points for the kills. Initiating close air support from the A-10 is just like calling in a strike for the point man’s AH-6J Little Bird. Using a laser target designator, you must first select a target area. Once the target area is chosen, you’re prompted to select the A-10’s approach vector—this determines at what angle the aircraft begins its strafing run. Soon after air strike has been initiated, an A-10 appears in the distance and begins a strafing run along the approach vector you designated. You can make the most of these strafing runs by lining them up along streets or other narrow, high-traffic areas.
