The Medal of Honor series began with the basic premise of telling a soldier’s story. Released on the Playstation back in the fall of 1999, the first title did just that, chronicling the adventures of an OSS field agent fighting behind enemy lines in World War II-era Europe. The success of the first game spawned a long-running and award-winning series of games set in WWII, each telling the story of a soldier risking it all to stem the tide of fascism.

Medal of Honor

Inspired by DreamWorks SKG co-founder Steven Spielberg, Medal of Honor marked the first WWII action-adventure game developed for the Playstation system. The game begins on June 5, 1944, the night before D-Day, when the Allied forces launched a massive aerial assault behind German lines. Assuming the role of a young C-47 pilot shot down during the operation, the player is recruited into the OSS and begins a new career as a field agent, participating in various covert operations, search and rescue assignments, and commando raids. Each mission is drawn from pivotal historical events that helped shape the Allied crusade in Europe, including sorties involving the development, capture, and destruction of secret war-making technologies. Upon release, Medal of Honor was seen as one of the best first-person shooters of its time, garnering praise for its graphics, level design, and original soundtrack, composed by Michael Giacchino.

Medal of Honor: Underground

Medal of Honor: Underground begins in 1942, not long after Germany crushed the French military and overran the country. Players are introduced to Manon, who has just witnessed her house destroyed and hometown occupied. With nothing left to lose, she joins one of the many clandestine resistance movements that have taken root throughout her homeland during the early days of the occupation. Over the course of the game, players will experience her ascent from a naive volunteer to a seasoned veteran who is ultimately recruited by the Americans for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), where she will eventually play a key role in the Liberation of Paris.

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault

In Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, players assumed the role of Lt. Mike Powell, member of the famed 1st Ranger Battalion, who gets recruited by the OSS and battles through more than twenty levels that are based on historical military campaigns of World War II. Set during the most trying years of the war, 1942–1945, Allied Assault gave players a sense of the courage it took to survive the landings at Normandy, the assault at Arzew, a rendezvous with the French Resistance outside the village of St. Lo, and the push through the heavily defended border of Germany. As the first title in the series on the PC, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault was met with critical acclaim and was soon followed by two expansion packs, Spearhead and Breakthrough.

Spearhead (Expansion Pack)

Spearhead was the first of two expansion packs for Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Players assumed the role of Sgt. Jack Barnes as he endured the final months of World War II, from Operation Overlord to the Battle of the Bulge, and culminating with the fall of Berlin. Set during the last year of the war in Europe, June 1944 to May 1945, Spearhead gave players a chance to parachute behind enemy lines during Operation Overlord, halt the German counter offensive during the Battle of the Bulge, and engage the Germans as they desperately tried to defend their capital.

Breakthrough (Expansion Pack)

Set in the European Theater of Operations from 1943–1944, Breakthrough was the final chapter in the popular Medal of Honor: Allied Assault series. As U.S. Army Sergeant John Baker, players joined the battle at Kasserine Pass in North Africa, raced to capture Messina in Sicily, and then finally repelled the German army at the historic battle of Monte Battaglia in the heart of Italy. Armed with a new arsenal of weapons, Sgt. Baker fought alone and with squadmates in a rush to stop the Axis powers by striking at the soft underbelly of Europe.

Medal of Honor: Frontline

Medal of Honor: Frontline took players back behind enemy lines with Lt. Jimmy Patterson. In this installment, Patterson and his men used the confusion of the real-world offensive Operation Market Garden to infiltrate the German frontline and steal the HO-IX flying wing, an experimental Nazi weapon so powerful that it could turn the tide of World War II. To help him succeed in his assignment, Lt. Patterson had the assistance of a small squad of soldiers and a slew of new weapons. Together they took on crucial assignments ranging from the assault on Omaha Beach, to the epic battle for control of the Nijmegen Bridge.

Medal of Honor: Rising Sun

Medal of Honor: Rising Sun gave gamers the opportunity to turn the tide in the Pacific, and marked the first time the series expanded beyond the European theater. Playing as Marine Corporal Joseph Griffin, Rising Sun told a far-reaching tale of two brothers as Japanese forces sought to expand their dominion over the Pacific. Featuring real-life historical battles like Pearl Harbor and Guadalcanal, Medal of Honor: Rising Sun delivered solid action and a compelling story.

Medal of Honor: Infiltrator

In Medal of Honor: Infiltrator, players assumed the role of Corporal Jake Murphy, during several daring missions to defeat the Axis in some of WWII’s most famous battles. From sabotaging enemy resources, to capturing key personnel, to all-out firefights, there was never any shortage of action. On foot, in a tank, or even in disguise, Murphy engaged opponents on the battlefield with a variety of WWII-era weapons including machine guns, grenades, and bazookas. The title also offered connectivity with the GameCube version of Medal of Honor: Rising Sun, allowing gamers to access a useful overhead map on their Game Boy Advance.

Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault

Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault ushered players into battle against the Imperial Japanese Army, taking them from the shock of Pearl Harbor to triumph on the shores of the Tarawa Atoll. Set in the Pacific Theater of Operations from 1941–1944, players jumped into the boots of Marine recruit Tom Conlin as he survived the attack on Pearl Harbor, led the assault on Guadalcanal, and finally charged up the beaches for the climatic battle at Tarawa. Expert input and advice from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and war veteran Capt. Dale Dye, U.S. Marine Corps, ensured historical accuracy, making for an authentic gaming experience.

Medal of Honor: European Assault

In Medal of Honor: European Assault, the story was the star. The year 1942 was a desperate time for Allied forces as the Nazi war machine raged across a devastated European landscape. Players assumed the role of U.S. Army Lieutenant William Holt, hand-picked by William “Wild Bill” Donovan to be the first field agent of the newly formed Office of Strategic Services—the OSS. Players guided Holt through covert operations set in France, North Africa, and the Soviet Union. He even meets up with Manon, the heroine from Medal of Honor: Underground, in Belgium.

Medal of Honor: Heroes

In Medal of Honor: Heroes, players fought their way through three campaigns as popular lead characters from past Medal of Honor games. This included a stint as Lieutenant Jimmy Patterson during his time in Holland during Operation Market Garden. Then gamers assumed control of Sergeant John Baker during a sabotage mission on German defenses positioned along the Italian coastline. Next, gamers tried on the officer’s cap of Lieutenant William Holt in a OSS mission within the Ardennes Forest during the Battle of the Bulge.

Medal of Honor: Vanguard

Medal of Honor: Vanguard allowed players to join the ranks of the elite 82nd Airborne Division as Corporal Frank Keegan. From Operation Husky on the shores of Sicily to the Operation Varsity airdrop inside Nazi Germany, Keegan jumped behind enemy lines to fight the epic WWII battles that turned America’s first paratroopers into heroes of WWII.

Medal of Honor: Airborne

In Medal Of Honor: Airborne, players stepped into the boots of Boyd Travers, Private First Class of the 82nd Airborne Division, and engaged in battles throughout Europe, from rocky beginnings in Sicily to war-winning triumphs in Germany. Each mission began behind enemy lines, with an intense and fully interactive airdrop. The ability to determine your own starting point dramatically changed the way each mission played out, and earned the title high praise from gamers and critics alike.

Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 starts on June 6, 1944, when the war was far from over. Players took on the role of OSS Operative John Berg and were tasked with infiltrating Normandy from behind enemy lines to undermine the Nazi regime. As a special agent of the Office of Strategic Services, you used tactics of combat, infiltration, reconnaissance, and sabotage to carry out the covert operations that helped defeat the Nazi war machine once and for all.

This Medal of Honor reboot was inspired by and developed with Tier 1 Operators, bringing the series into the modern era. Players stepped into the boots of elite warriors and applied their unique skill sets to a new enemy in the most unforgiving and hostile battlefield conditions of present day Afghanistan. The intense story featured a diverse group of soldiers in a gritty campaign, showcasing the surgical tactics of Tier 1 Operators combined with the sledgehammer force of Army Rangers. The fast-paced campaign concluded with a dangerous rescue mission set in the unforgiving terrain of Takur Ghar as Voodoo, Preacher and a Ranger QRF scoured the enemy-infested mountains for their two captive SEAL comrades.
