Quantum Break eGuide Walkthrough Act 1

Part 3

Library Chase

Separated from William, Jack encounters a mysterious Monarch operative who, unlike her colleagues, doesn’t appear to be after him. In fact, she tells Jack that Monarch has taken William to the nearby library, which has been cleared out for the upcoming demolition. Racing there to rescue William, Jack runs into Paul Serene—but not the Paul Serene he knew. This Serene is 17 years older, and in charge of Monarch. He overpowers Jack, and then asks William to join him. William utterly refuses, and says he’ll never stop opposing Serene.

Serene appears to kill William by activating the library’s demolition charges and leaving him crushed by huge chunks of masonry even as Jack watches. But before Jack can act, he’s rendered unconscious by Liam Burke, and captured.

As Jack walks back into the building, he is greeted by Beth Wilder at gunpoint. As far as he knows, he has never seen her before, but she clearly recognizes him. Jack is scared for his brother and yells at Beth, asking where he is. She tells him that they are taking Will to the library. Jack is confused why Beth is helping him, but as she lowers her weapon, he chooses to trust her.

Jack needs to hurry to catch his brother. Jack runs back into the lecture hall through, which he and Will came through earlier. It is now 4:31am on October 9th, 2016—16 minutes after Fracture in time.

Optional: Watch the echo of Will being detained by Monarch security.

There’s an echo from the past near the speaker’s podium. Jack watches as two Monarch security guards are holding his brother captive. They say, “We’re supposed to take William Joyce alive if he doesn’t put up a fight.” In the echo, William is pleading with the guards to let him go.

Mandatory: Open the door and enter the next room.

Jack walks up the staircase of the lecture hall and reaches a closed door at the top of the stairs.

Mandatory: By pressing LB, Jack can now Time Dodge—and the bullet that one of the guards had fired at him instead hits the second guard. Jack runs behind a bookshelf to take cover.

As he opens the door, two Monarch guards immediately turn toward Jack and raise their weapons, but something strange happens. Jack suddenly leaps forward.

After Jack eliminates the first two Monarch operatives, the door on the far side of the room opens and two more guards arrive.

Optional: Jack encounters another echo while walking through the corridor. The two guards pushing his brother are talking about an airlift that’s already initiated. Will asks them, “The Time Machine? You’re taking the Time Machine?”

Once all of the Monarch guards have been defeated, Jack heads through the now open doorway and down the adjacent corridor.

Mandatory: Open the door to the cafeteria.

As he comes to the end of the corridor, Jack reaches the entrance to the MacDonald Cafeteria. He knows that it’s urgent to reach the library, before the Monarch henchmen harm his brother.

As Jack goes to open the door. The sound of an explosion is heard and the lights in the building go out. He approaches the door and opens it. Walk to the large window in the corridor to observe an explosion outside.

Jack enters the cafeteria. A number of operatives are waiting for him inside; four upstairs and four more downstairs.

Eventually, the power in the building is restored and the lights come back on.

After a few of them have been dispatched, two more arrive downstairs.

Mandatory: Take out all enemies in the area

Jack finishes off the remaining enemies in the cafeteria, then heads outside to the construction yard near the library.

After Jack exits the cafeteria, he sees an operative leading Will through the front door of the library. He runs after him, but his chase ends at a locked gate and a barbed-wired fence.

Jack must find another way to the library and runs into a nearby courtyard. While searching for a way in, he suddenly hears a gunshot from the other side of the fence.

After searching for a way to get into the locked-off construction yard behind the fence, Jack finds several porta-potties nearby.

Once he’s successfully climbed up the porta-potties, Jack can see into the construction yard on the other side.

Collectible: Interact with the radio to obtain an Audio File collectible.

He jumps down and finds a radio on a barrel near a dead Monarch operative.

After searching for a way into the library, Jack eventually finds the scaffolding covered with yellow tarps in the middle of the construction yard. Jack climbs to the top.

Once he reaches the top of the scafforlding, Jack must find a way to stabilize Scissor Lift to traverse it.

Mandatory: Use Time Stop on the lift to freeze it in place, then jump from the scaffolding to the left and across to the ladder near the building.
Mandatory: Enter the window.

Jack climbs the ladder to the next level, then walks down to the open window. As he enters the window, Jack is surprised by a Monarch operative on the rooftop after a Monarch helicopter passes by, but a mystery stranger takes the operative out, allowing Jack to get inside.

Inside, Jack is looking for a way into the main library building. After a short search, he heads through a narrow doorway covered by scaffolding.

In the next room, he overhears a radio communication between a Monarch operative and HQ informing them that they have William Joyce in the libary and are awaiting orders. Another operative is wondering where Jack is. Hearing that, Jack decides to jump down through the hole in the hallway floor.

Mandatory: Take out the two operatives ahead.

Monarch HQ acknowledges the report and orders them to keep a skeleton crew to watch Will. All remaining crews are ordered to the dry docks’ Chronon extraction grounds and await further orders.

Once the operatives have been dealt with, HQ announces that the library has been set to blow in five minutes. Jack jumps to the first floor.

Optional: Watching the echo shows a Monarch operative leading Will to the East Wing of the library.

This place clearly has seen better days. Construction materials and debris are everywhere. As Jack is searching the first floor for an entrance to the library, he encounters another echo near a doorway.

Jack heads to the East Wing doorway. He walks toward a large doorway near the location of the echo. A large blue canvas partially covers the impressive craftsmanship of the arched entrance.

Mandatory: Open the door to the East Wing of the library.

The connecting corridor is lined with plywood and other debris and does not give the impression that it might lead into anything as impressive as a classic university library, but after a few moments, Jack reaches a beautiful and imposing entrance.

As Jack heads through the doorway to the library, he encounters a number of Monarch operatives on the other side. Will is being held at the opposite end of the room. Will screams a warning and tells Jack to run, but one of the Monarch guards hits Will with the back of his rifle and he falls to the ground.

Mandatory: Press B when prompted to use Time Shield.

One of the Monarch operatives fires a shot directly at Jack, but as his power continue to grow, a TIme Shield forms around him and protects him from the projectile.

Jack runs toward one of the large columns of the library to take cover. From there, he has to fight his way through the large hall to get to his brother.

As he heads toward the staircases, Jack has to take out a large number of Monarch operatives. Once the path upstairs is cleared, Jack approaches Will. Despite being hit in the head, Will immediately tells Jack that they have to hurry and asks where his car is.

Jack jokes that he didn’t like the color, but right as Will is about to reply, more Monarch operatives enter the library.

Mandatory: Take out the remaining Monarch operatives.

As Jack engages the operatives, Will is complaining that his briefcase was in his car, but Jack can’t react to his brother as he has his hands full fighting off another wave of Monarch operatives. After the last operative has been eliminated, Jack runs back upstairs to free Will.

He tells Jack that the first have to find his briefcase and then have to find Beth Wilder. Jack asks why and Will only answers that she knows about the Fracture and that he trusts her. Jack complains that Will should have trusted him, but his brother explains that he kept secrets from him in order to keep him safe.

Mandatory: Follow Will to the East Wing exit of the library.

As Jack follows Will down the staircase and toward the door, he bitterly remarks that he hasn’t been safe since he’s been back. Will maintains that this isn’t his fault—and that Beth warned him this would happen—and that he did everything in his power to stop it.

Jack continues that his brother never told him about any of this. Will explains that they don’t have time for this and that they need to get out before more of them show up. Jack and Will continue their escape through the library and finally reach the exit.

As Jack exits the library, Paul Serene’s voice surprises him from behind. It is 4:40am—25 minutes after the Fracture. A cutscene plays in which Paul and Will argue about what’s at stake. Paul explains that nobody can change what’s coming—that he has been trying to stop this for 17 years. Will tells him that he has built a device that can stop it, but Paul does not listen. He orders the library destruction and Will is buried under the falling debris.
