Charlie Wincott

Charlie Wincott is a weasel. He’s an intelligent man with a great degree of technical competence and a knack for manipulation, but he’s also petty, arrogant and cowardly. In the rat’s nest full of neuroses, fears and resentments that comprise his personality, extremely bad self-esteem and a truly massive ego have found a comfortable balance. To Charlie, everything is a potential challenge to his authority and expertise. Everybody else is a moron that needs to be shown who the man is.

And Charlie is definitely the man. Just ask him.

He’s also very, very lonely. As an expert on computer security and media manipulation, he’s created a bubble of technical superiority and authority for himself, and in it, he’s feels securely above those he considers lesser beings. Charlie has no peers—there are only drones who will do as they’re told, or superiors who never think of him as their equal.

He doesn’t have many friends, either, or any real understanding of how to make them. Like a sad pick-up artist, he’s tried to reduce human Interaction to formulaic behaviors, and when they don’t produce actual results, he’s lost.

Deep down, Charlie knows he’s pathetic; what he doesn’t know is how obvious it is to others. A classic case of a bully who became one as the result of years of bullying, Charlie loves to put others in their place, and hates it when he feels like an outsider—both of which happen constantly.

And yet, there’s more to Charlie than all this. When pushed far enough, when faced with real human emotion and the actual real-world consequences of his incredible arrogance and lack of moral backbone, Charlie digs deep within himself and finds something resembling courage and conviction, and uses them to do something for the sake of others.
