There are people in the world who just don’t give a damn, but nobody could ever accuse Amy of being one of them—if anything, Amy’s made it her business to care about causes. She’s smart, young, and energetic, and her zeal for justice has not yet been tempered by bitter experience and jaded indifference. She knows some people see it as naiveté, but she feels no shame about wanting to believe that the world can be a better place than it is, and that it’s up to her to do her part.
Amy always knew Monarch Solutions was no good. She’s seen too many huge corporations play nice in public and get away with outrageous shenanigans behind closed doors. The way Monarch is turning Riverport into a soulless carbon copy of every other featureless place in the world rubs her the wrong way, and the way they get their way just by throwing enough money around, regardless of the impact on the people affected by those decisions, infuriates her.
Still, she never expected Monarch to actually do any of this—the idea of having somebody threaten to murder her family while forcing her to betray her friends and frame an innocent man for a crime he didn’t commit was too big, too direct. She was prepared to deal with corruption and intimidation, indifference and apathy—big money rolling over citizens’ rights, and everybody looking the other way. This is something different.
But Amy’s not going to take it lying down. Being roped into the all-pervading weirdness that is Jack Joyce’s life is another thing she didn’t expect, but she knows how to adapt, and she’s not the type to just sit down and give up, and hope somebody else deals with the situation. Monarch threatened her family, and they can’t get away with that. Amy intends to show the world what they are.
