Liam is the kind of man you don’t want to anyone to point at you. Exceptionally capable and coldly efficient, he’ll do what’s asked of him—legal, illegal, it doesn’t much matter to him. He’s a stone professional, and he literally knows how to get away with murder. Being employed by Monarch Solutions and often assigned to situations that require a high decree of discretion, combined with extreme action without hesitation, he’s in his element when things get ugly.
Or at least he was. But there’s another side to Liam. He has a wife, Emily, and they have a child on the way. They are everything to him, and they’ve changed him in ways he never expected—somewhere along the line, priorities shifted for him, and all of a sudden he has qualms. That in itself would not be enough to cause him to divert from course—Liam knows how the world works, and his entire life is built on compartmentalization. He’s the sort of man who can do terrible, ugly things and, at the end of the day, sleep well at night.
But Liam’s first loyalty is to his own. Originally, Liam was selected for Monarch’s Striker program on the basis of his exceptional skills, willpower and physical competence, and he progressed well in the program, even if he was never fully briefed on what Monarch was truly preparing for. However, psychological tests indicated that his attachment to his wife disqualified from completing the program. Once the End of Time arrived, Strikers would have to be effective operatives focused on the tasks at hand. But Liam would not be able to let go. He would become a problem.
This assessment proves prescient, as once Liam discovers that there’s an enormous, existential threat to his family, and that his employer will not be including him or his family in its survival plan, everything changes for him. From that point on, Liam’s only loyalty is to Emily and his unborn child, and everybody else is expendable—even Liam himself.
