Completing Courses
Depending on the level, you may be tasked with reaching a Goal Pole, defeating a group of Reznors, or thwarting a particularly formidable enemy. No matter the task, however, you must complete it within the specified time limit.
Unlocking Paths
Main Paths
The locations scattered throughout each World are connected by a series of paths. All Worlds contain a main path that leads from the starting location to the Castle at the far end of the World. Each time you complete a level on the main path, you unlock the next level on the way to the Castle.
Alternate Paths
Some paths only reveal themselves once you’ve met certain conditions, and many such paths allow you to bypass various levels on your way to a World’s Castle. These paths can often be purchased with collected Star Coins, but many paths only appear after you’ve found a secret exit hidden within a nearby level.
Star Rating
As you meet certain conditions within the game, a star rating will appear on your saved game file.
To earn a five-star rating, you must meet all five of the following conditions:
- Complete World 6-Castle (defeat Bowser).
- Collect all Star Coins and Moon Coins.
- Unlock all paths.
- Reach the limit of 1,110 remaining lives.
- Complete all levels (without help from an Invincibility Leaf).
Coin Total
From the moment you start playing, the game keeps track of every coin you collect. As your Coin Total increases, the coin pile on the Title Screen grows to reflect your progress.
