A thief’s tools can be just as important as his wits. Let’s explore the many different weapons and gadgets at Garrett’s disposal.
Using the Bow
Garrett’s powerful bow is a marvel of modern design. It collapses for easy storage and springs to readiness at a moment’s notice. Tap the Use Bow button to ready the weapon, hold the button to aim, and release the button to fire. The longer you hold the Use Bow button, the more precise Garrett’s targeting reticle becomes—look for the reticle to animate or gain crosshairs to ensure that your aim is true. Just don’t hold the button for too long, or the reticle will begin to expand again, indicating that Garrett is losing focus. If you miss your window or decide not to fire, press the Cancel button to quit aiming. Press the button again to store the crossbow.
The crossbow can fire a variety of arrows, each with their own special uses and benefits. The following table details each type of arrow that Garrett can acquire.
Arrow Types
| Arrow | Max. Carry (Default) | Description | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blast Arrows | 3 | These arrows create a large explosion on impact, shattering breakable objects, detonating explosive barrels, igniting kerosene spills, and killing guards. They can’t be acquired until you’ve advanced to “Chapter 4: A Friend in Need.” | |
| Blunt Arrows | 15 | These arrows have no arrowhead and therefore inflict little damage. Use them to hit distant switches or ladder cranks, or fire them at surfaces to create noise and distract guards. Hit a guard in the head to stun him for a brief time. | |
| Broadhead Arrows | 5 | These arrows feature a sharp arrowhead and are intended to wound and kill Garrett’s adversaries from afar. Score a headshot, and the victim will be instantly and silently killed. (Aim for the face/throat area if the target wears a helmet.) | |
| Choke Arrows | 5 | These arrows release a cloud of noxious gas on impact, temporarily choking the victim and rendering them helpless for a brief time. This can allow Garrett to slip past the target or take them out with less effort. Victims of choke arrows become instantly suspicious. Choke arrows can also extinguish open flame light sources, just like water arrows, and will knockout caged birds and dogs. | |
| Fire Arrows | 10 | These arrows create a small, fiery explosion on impact. They won’t set people on fire, but they can ignite flammable objects, such as explosive barrels or pools of kerosene. Use Focus to spot flammable objects in the area, then look for opportunities to ignite them with fire arrows. This can create a distraction or burn up Garrett’s adversaries, killing them. | |
| Rope Arrows | 5 | These arrows have long ropes attached to them. Fire them at anchor beams, and Garrett will be able to climb the rope afterward to reach higher ground. Anchor beams can be easily identified with Focus. | |
| Sawtooth Arrows | 3 | These arrows have a sharp, serrated arrowhead, helping them penetrate armor and inflict lethal damage. Use them to gravely wound or slay distant threats. | |
| Water Arrows | 10 | These arrows release a small burst of water on impact. Use them to douse open flames, such as torches, braziers, and fires, so that you may sneak through the darkness unseen. Beware that guards become curious when a nearby flame is doused and often move to relight it. | |
Inventory Menu
Every usable item that Garrett carries can be accessed by opening his inventory. Press the Open Inventory button to call up the inventory, then select the item you wish to equip. The in-game action slows to a crawl while you view Garrett’s inventory, so take your time and pick the right item for the job.
Quick Swap
Two of Garrett’s inventory items can be set to Quick Swap buttons. Hold one of the Quick Swap buttons, and you’ll be prompted to set an item to it. Once set, the item can be quickly readied by tapping the corresponding Quick Swap button. This saves you from having to open Garrett’s inventory each time you wish to use your favorite items. Water arrows and broadhead arrows are set to the Quick Swap buttons by default.
Food and Poppies
Food items restore Garrett’s health, and poppies replenish his Focus. Keep an eye out for these restoratives, using Focus to spot them. Once collected, food and poppies are stored in Garrett’s inventory. Open the inventory and press the indicated button to consume food or poppies. Consuming just one of these items will replenish a large amount (about two-thirds) of Garrett’s health or Focus.
Throwables
Glass bottles and other throwable items are found practically everywhere. Garrett can pick up and carry one throwable item with him. Open the inventory to select the item, then take aim and throw it to create a noisy distraction. Distracting guards can set them up for pickpocketing or stealth takedowns or can simply allow Garrett to slip past unseen. Just be careful not to throw the item too close to guards, or they may become suspicious instead of merely curious.
Flash Bombs
When you’re about to be detected and there’s no hope of escape, drop a flash bomb to create a blinding spark of light that stuns nearby enemies, giving you a chance to flee the scene. Garrett can carry up to five of these valuable items with him.
Wrench Tool
After “Chapter 1: Lockdown,” Garrett has the option to purchase tools, upgrades, and other items from a shady merchant in the City. The wrench tool is the best early purchase he can make, for it quickly pays for itself by allowing Garrett to open vent-covered crawl spaces that lead to secret areas and hidden treasures. Some of these crawl spaces provide Garrett with tactical advantage, allowing him to take shortcuts through areas, circumventing guards and facilitating infiltration. No master thief should be without this versatile tool.
In addition, the wrench can be used to unscrew special plaques from walls of buildings around the City. Though they afford no monetary value, these plaques are counted as collectibles, and each one dishes out a bit of the City’s troubled history.
Razor Tool
After “Chapter 2: Dust to Dust,” the shady merchant offers a new tool: the razor. Though sharp enough to kill, this slick blade cannot be used in combat. Instead, Garrett uses the razor to slice certain paintings out of their frames, stealing them. Like the aforementioned plaques, these stolen paintings cannot be sold for gold; instead, they count as special collectibles that Garrett uses to liven up his secret hideout, the Clock Tower. Pick up the razor tool as soon as you can, or else you’ll need to revisit certain chapters and side jobs in order to claim all of their collectibles.
Wire Cutter Tool
The wire cutter tool is also sold by the shady merchant after “Chapter 2: Dust to Dust,” and it comes in quite handy. Purchase it as soon as you can, then use the wire cutter to hack into every metal control box you see on walls. Hacking these boxes can have a variety of beneficial effects, including disabling traps, opening sealed doors, and revealing hidden secrets. A must-have for any professional thief.
