Thief eGuide How to Play

The Journal

Over the years, Garrett has found it helpful to keep a careful record of his goals and deeds. This record is known as the Journal. Open the Journal at any time to review all of Garrett’s objectives and accomplishments.

Journal: Objectives

Visit the “Objectives” section of the Journal to view Garrett’s current objective, along with his progress in the chapter’s Thieving Challenges.

Thieving Challenges

Every story chapter and client job in Thief features four unique Thieving Challenges. Common examples include remaining undetected for the entire mission or lifting all of the common and collectible loot items in the stage. Though completely optional, Thieving Challenges add an extra layer of depth to each mission. Garrett also receives large sums of bonus gold whenever he completes a new Thieving Challenge.

Thieving Challenges sometimes conflict with each other, so it’s not always possible to complete all Thieving Challenges in one attempt. It’s therefore wise to go for the challenges that pair best with your favorite Playstyle. For example, if one Thieving Challenge asks you to perform a number of headshot kills during the mission, then that will pair best with the “Predator” Playstyle. Read on to learn more about Playstyles and the actions that can affect them.

Side Jobs

Like Thieving Challenges, side jobs are optional tasks that Garrett can complete to increase his wealth. Unlike Thieving Challenges, side jobs are undertaken between story chapters (not during them). Garrett’s longtime friend Basso is your main source for side jobs, but several other clients around the City offer them as well.

Basso’s jobs are short and simple and can be easily completed as you explore the City. Client jobs are much more involved and function more like mini-chapters, complete with their own set of Thieving Challenges for you to pursue.

Follow along with the walkthrough, and you’ll accomplish all of Basso’s side jobs as you explore the City. The walkthrough also indicates whenever new client jobs are available, but due to their length and involvement, all client jobs are covered in a separate chapter of this guide. Flip to the “Client Jobs” chapter to find their detailed walkthroughs.

Journal: Player Progression

The Journal’s “Player Progression” menu is a fantastic resource for keeping track of your accomplishments. This menu features the following informative submenus:

Statistics: View all of the game’s most important tracked stats, including the number of loot items discovered, the total gold you’ve stolen, and your progress in the active Thieving Challenges. Use this vital information to ensure you’re keeping pace with the walkthrough.

Tools & Upgrades: Whenever Garrett acquires a new tool or upgrade, its information is recorded here for future reference.

Trinkets: Similarly, any new trinkets that Garrett acquires are detailed here for future reference.

Resources: As above, any new resources that Garrett acquires are detailed here for future reference.

Journal: Focus Upgrades

As previously mentioned, Garrett can spend precious Focus points to increase his many Focus abilities. Open the Journal and select “Focus Upgrades” to spend the Focus points you’ve accumulated. Even if you don’t have points to spend, you can visit this menu to review the various abilities you’ve taken and plan out which ones you’ll upgrade next. Garrett’s Focus energy is fully restored each time he upgrades a Focus ability.

Journal: Collectibles

Loot is found all over the place, but only the rarest and most prized valuables are tracked in the Journal as collectibles. Visit this section of the Journal to view every collectible you’ve found in glorious detail. The walkthrough will help you track down every last collectible in Garrett’s world.

Journal: Documents

Visit the documents section of the Journal to view and read every collectible document that Garrett has discovered. Be sure to read each document carefully, for many provide vital clues that aren’t always obvious at first glance.

Journal: View Map

Every time Garrett visits a new area, his Journal’s map is updated. Check the map often to find your bearings, verify the name of the current area, and plot courses through the environment. Once you’re fairly certain of the route you wish to take, you can use the in-game minimap to stay on track without having to open the Journal and repeatedly check the full map.
