Small animals are caged pets like reptiles, birds, or rodents. This category also includes a few odd “pets” like pet stones and the ant farm object. Small animals are not considered full household members, they’re not playable characters, and they don’t have any Petology. They’re really more like objects with some fun new interactions.
Small pets make good starter pets, or pets for people who don’t have a lot of space to keep larger animals. Small animal pets also require a lot less care, so they’re ideal for busy Sims. Or maybe this is a child’s chance to prove to her parents that she really is responsible enough to have a pet, pleeeeeeeeease!
To start out with a small animal pet, your Sim must first purchase an appropriate habitat from Buy Mode. There are six different habitats:

Lizard Terrarium
Rodent Terrarium
Snake Terrarium
Turtle Terrarium
Bird Tree
