Seeking collectibles takes on a whole new dimension when your pets can help you! Dogs who’ve been trained to hunt can dig up rocks, gems, and minerals, and occasionally even relic fragments.
Cats who’ve chosen to learn to hunt can bring back reptiles, snakes, lizards, turtles, rodents, birds, and fish. And while horses don’t sniff out collectibles, they can quickly carry you across the countryside looking for them. Pets are a great addition to a collector’s toolkit.
Sniffing out collectibles is a way for your pets earn some Simoleons for the household. But it’s also a way to get some great new small animal pets you can’t just buy. Experienced hunting cats can bring back some rare specimens!

On rare occasions, you’ll reel up something other than fish. Folks in the countryside sometimes throw unwanted items into the river or ponds, but their refuse is another Sim’s treasure. When you do manage to reel in a crate, it may well contain a valuable item. If you’re really lucky the crate may contain a magic gnome.

Insects
You or your hunting cats can catch plenty of butterflies and beetles around Appaloosa Plains. Insects can be sold at the science facility for cash, or placed in terrariums to decorate your lot. Sims love to have a collection of pretty insects around, so consider the environmental effects before trading these finds for cash.
Beetles
Beetles scurry around underfoot all around Appaloosa Plains, minding their own business until you, or your cat, come along to collect them. All can be sold... er, that is... “donated to science” at the science lab, but remember that even beetles can beautify your lot, so consider that before parting with them. Generally the more Simoleons they’d bring in, the more they’d beautify your lot.

Minerals
Now, your trained hunting dog can help find precious gems and minerals! Send your dog sniffing across the countryside for these bits of sparkly treasure.
Gems
As always, gems require an extra step to make good use of them. You must send them away to be cut into beautiful stones, which increases their value. You must pay to have a gem cut. To have a gem cut, use the interaction on the mailbox or on the gem itself. The more cuts you have made, the more become available, and the more money you can earn from the better cuts.

Metals
Your Sims and their dogs can hunt for a variety of metals across the fields and hills of Appaloosa Plains. However, when you pick these up, they are still in ore form. Those metals must be smelted to make them valuable and pretty. To smelt them, send them off through the mailbox. When the ingot comes back, the value has improved by up to 75 percent. That’s quite a boost for the §40 smelting fee.
