Memory 01/“Bottom Of The Barrel”

Mission Overview
Challenges

■Four Cherry Bomb lures: see .

■ Two Poison Gas kills: see .

Notes & Further Reading

■This Memory is started at the Brotherhood Sanctuary, but takes place in Versailles.

■ Though Arno wears different attire in this Memory, his core attributes are unaffected: he still has the same stats and capabilities conferred by your chosen equipment.

This map shows an overview of an easy route for the inebriated Arno to follow in order to reach the waypoint. The two “X” marks indicate ideal positions to throw Cherry Bombs to complete the first Challenge and draw potential hostiles away from Arno’s path. The numbers correspond to the next four steps of this walkthrough.

From your start position, go through the gate and take cover behind the low wall. Throw a Cherry Bomb at the approximate position shown here to cause all guards in the vicinity to turn away and investigate. Given the number of enemies in the area, this may satisfy the Challenge requirements immediately.

Move to the end of the wall and use Eagle Vision to identify a patrolling guard behind the next wall. If required, you can throw another Cherry Bomb at the marked spot to occupy him for a few seconds. When he is facing away, sprint through the opening and climb onto the low roof, then move out of sight.

Don’t climb onto the upper roof: there is a sniper stationed there. Instead, drop down onto the street on the opposite side and run in the direction of the waypoint marker.

There are enemies inside the building, so be careful in how you approach it. Move to the position illustrated above and climb onto the balcony. From there, go through the open door and turn right to find Arno’s prize. Hold / to end the flashback.

When play resumes, travel to the waypoint and enter the building, as shown above. After the cutscene, Arno will recollect a new event from the previous evening. The fight that occurs here ends when Arno sustains a relatively small level of damage, but there is no penalty for this (though expert players will want to knock down at least a few assailants for the sake of pride). A brief chase ensues. Sprint after the marked individual until Arno moves within suitable range, then press / to perform a tackle.

When you begin in the palace, lock into cover on the left-hand side of the door directly ahead. In the next room, one Extremist faces away while a second prowls the area, and will eventually approach Arno. You can speed things up a little by rushing into cover as shown above, then dispatching the patrolling enemy when he passes. Eliminate the other Extremist, then go through the next door.

Stand at the next doorway and watch the Extremists on the other side. Wait until the Brute walks into the distance, then sneak in and quietly eliminate the two enemies facing away from Arno. You should then take cover behind the couch covered by a white sheet.

From your position, hit the Brute with a Berserk Blade. When he attacks his cohorts, a pitched battle will ensue involving all Extremists in the room. This is your cue to throw Poison Gas Bombs at the heart of the melee – though it’s best to wait for the effects of each device to wear off before you toss another one. This will complete the second Challenge; any survivors can be picked off with the Phantom Blades. Before you move on, be sure to loot the bodies: you may find another Poison Gas Bomb, which will be useful later.

Go through the door at the very end of the huge room, then approach the door to your right. Quietly kill the Brute and, once again, loot his corpse for a chance to replenish your Poison Gas Bomb supply.

The single patrolling guard in the next room is no trouble at all; it’s entirely your choice as to whether you approach his oblivious companion at the far wall. When you are ready, go out of the door and take the first left. Go straight through this small room to reach a balcony overlooking a courtyard.

From the balcony, study the two Extremists below. When the patrolling Defender walks away, drop down and perform a cover kill on the enemy slouching against the pedestal. You can then bide your time and disable the Defender from behind. Go through the open door and take cover.

This large room is occupied by three Extremists: two who are inclined to patrol, and a third who remains stationary unless alerted. From your position in cover just inside the door, the safest way to clear the path forward is with Phantom Blade headshots.

Go through the next two empty rooms to find the final two Extremists in the palace interior. One walks a wide patrol of the room, while the other searches the shelf behind the piano. You can quietly stab both, then go into the corridor beyond; the exit to the grounds outside is on the left-hand side.

When you approach the exit, take cover and wait for the Extremists to walk away. You can then move through the door and take cover in a position that gives you a clearer view of the area outside.

The gang leader is accompanied by a Seeker bodyguard as he moves around the area; there is also a Brute, another Seeker and a vanilla soldier, all high-level assailants, who will remain stationary unless alerted. There are several ways to eliminate the gang leader, but a straight fight is an outcome to avoid unless you thrive in difficult combat encounters. Instead, we suggest that you wait until the target reaches the part of his patrol marked by an X, then hit him with a Berserk Blade. If he walks too fast for you to adjust your aim, consider stopping him with a Cherry Bomb before you strike. If you have more Berserk Blades to spare, it’s worthwhile to hit another high-strength target (a Seeker or the Brute) to make the fight a little more interesting. With the combatants oblivious to your presence, you can then pitch in Poison Gas Bombs or make Phantom Blade headshots until the last Extremist falls.

Notes & Further Reading

■With so many Extremists in the area, open conflict will almost certainly end in disaster. Our walkthrough here focuses on a slow and methodical approach that will enable you to reduce the number of hostiles while completing the two Challenges.

Arno’s start position, facing almost directly south.

La Touche, standing in plain sight, but protected by an intimidating number of guards. There are also snipers on two nearby towers, and stationed at certain windows. A frontal assault is, in essence, a suicidal gesture.

The Assistance Opportunity can be found here, though there are a number of guards to neutralize or sneak by to reach it. If you move Arno to the front of the stand, you can press / to lift the cover, enabling the nearby citizens to see the food and surge forward.

A cage where the condemned await execution… and the opportunity to complete this mission’s Unique Kill. There are two familiar faces here. If you can sneak to the cage door, you will trigger an objective to steal a key from a set target (see ). Return to the pen with the key, and Arno will enter and move himself to the front of the queue. When he is ushered forward to the guillotine, Arno then has a short window of opportunity to approach La Touche and strike with the Hidden Blade.

The Extremist holding the key to the cage is found on the top floor of this building.

From your start position, follow the route shown here to reach the row of buildings in the southwest corner of the Restricted Area.

Move to the far side of the buildings and approach the first of the two open windows shown above. Activate Eagle Vision to identify a sniper overlooking the execution platform on the far side of the house. If he is facing away, jump through a window.

The sniper regularly moves between the two open windows. When he comes to a halt, lock to cover behind him and perform the first cover kill for the related Challenge.

Go back through the window and follow the route shown above.

The sniper on the rooftop may seem like an opportunity for a Phantom Blade kill, but the impact usually causes his body to slide from the rooftop – which will complicate the next stage of the mission. Instead, sneak up and perform a Hidden Blade kill. You can then hit the sniper on the watchtower with a Phantom Blade headshot.

Climb down to a position just above the door and, after using Eagle Vision to check that there is no one approaching, drop down and lock to cover on the right-hand side of it. There is a stationary Brute inside the house, but your first priority is to wait for an Extremist with a long patrol to approach your position. When he arrives, perform a cover kill, then go inside and quietly neutralize the Brute.

After ascertaining that no Extremists are watching, go out of the door and Blend with the crowd outside. When the coast is clear, sneak through the next door and immediately lock to cover on the right-hand side. One of the Extremists guarding the food has a patrol that takes him into the building shown above, offering a perfect cover kill opportunity.

Go back outside and Blend with the nearby crowd. Your labors so far leave the Assistance Opportunity here protected by a single Extremist, but his patrol means that you have ample time to approach the front of the stand and press / to reveal the foodstuffs hidden behind the sheet to the watching crowds. As the citizens surge forwards, carefully make your way through the door of the building where you earlier killed a Brute to reach the street to the south.

On the street, make your way to the east to reach a building in the southeast corner of the Restricted Area. As before, we’re going to carefully eliminate dangerous Extremists to clear an easy path to the Assassination Opportunity. Lock into cover beneath the window and wait for a patrolling Seeker to arrive above you, then perform a cover kill.

There is also a Brute in this building, and he could potentially be a problem when you later approach the cage. If you go through the window and walk a few steps to the left to reach the location shown here, you can perform a Phantom Blade headshot to work towards the quota required for the second Challenge. With this accomplished, return to the street outside.

Lock to cover at the corner of the next building along, as illustrated above. An Extremist will step out of the door; perform a cover kill to eliminate him.

From the position of the last kill, climb to the open window on the top floor of the building and go inside.

Lock to cover behind the sniper and perform a cover kill. You should then go to the window at the far end of the room and climb outside.

Hit the sniper on the watchtower with a Phantom Blade headshot to complete the related Challenge.

Retrace your steps through the house and to the street, then follow the route shown here, sneaking carefully behind the wooden fence in the alleyway to reach a position of concealment next to the cage. Wait for the Extremist to approach the door. When he turns and walks away, sneak to the door to initiate a conversation between Arno and two prisoners. You can actually move back out of sight behind the fence once it begins, well before the patrolling Extremist returns.

The Extremist carrying the keys to the cage is located in the building right next to your position; we’ve highlighted the area where he can be found. As climbing up carries a risk of detection, it’s much wiser to run back to the far side of the house and climb up on that side. Disable the Extremist, loot his keys, then return to the fence next to the cage door. Ensure that you have Smoke Bombs equipped before you continue.

Return to the cage and, once again, wait for the patrolling Extremist to walk away from the door, then approach and press / to unlock it. In the cinematic that follows, Arno will enter the holding pen and move himself to the front of the execution queue. When play resumes, immediately walk – don’t run! – at the same pace as the two Defenders who escort Arno to the wooden platform. When you reach the ramp, you are free to walk towards La Touche. You have just enough time to move within range for a Hidden Blade assassination before he and his guards recognize Arno. After the post-assassination cinematic, drop Smoke Bombs to confuse pursuing Extremists as you sprint through the crowd to the south. Turn right when you reach the street, then take the first left to reach a long road. With the Smoke Bombs and crowd foiling attempts at pursuit, this should be a straightforward run.

The third Server Bridge event begins when you dismiss the Memory Complete page. Run towards the waypoint and climb one of the surrounding buildings, then leap into the portal below.
