Milestone 12: Downzone

Escort Lily Drawl to EuroCorp HQ

Since there are Cayman Global Agents after you, Lily decides to land the dropship in the Downzone rather than going all the way back to the EuroCorp facility.

Once the dropship lands, step out of it and into the slums of New York City.

Start off by giving Lily a hand jumping up to reach a ladder so that she can enter a warehouse and open the door from the inside.

Look inside the alley that has been gated off. Activate the DART overlay and you can see the propaganda inside.

Once Lily opens the door to a small warehouse, walk through to the other side.

INTEL FEED

/ urban.development_EC-Dictionary: definition

DOWNZONE—noun (doun-zohn)

The sad and despoiled remnants of the old world. To the Syndicates and most Upzone residents, they are bitter memories of a failed system that stubbornly refuse to go away. Living constantly in the shadow of the great monoliths of Uptown, this is where those who were left behind eke out their existence. Non-consumers, non-chipped, and as far as the Syndicates are concerned, non-existent.

Consumer Migration: Since the Skyward Migration most buildings have been left in a state of disrepair and there is little in the way of law enforcement. The Downzones are replete with crime, gang warfare and social unrest. What little direct influence the Syndicates exert here is usually in the shape of hired mercenaries or sponsored paramilitary groups. Otherwise they are content with simply cordoning off the Downzones to prevent crime and unrest from spilling over into the pristine Uptown districts, while dispatching the occasional Agent to deal with the worst subverter cells (see separate entries).

/ end of entry

Head to the left and break open a grate and then drop down into a tunnel system. Crouch down and move through the tunnels until you find a hatch. Open it and continue on.

Eventually you reach a small room with a ladder. Climb the ladder to emerge into a stairwell. Move through the nearby door to find yourself on the ground floor of a larger warehouse.

Walk into the control room and press the action button while standing near the controls to turn the power on.

Look behind some shelves on the left side of the warehouse to see a EuroCorp poster. Activate your DART overlay to see the resistance graffiti.

New Propaganda Tag

TWB: DATA VESSEL

"Innovation Working for You"
"ORGANIC DATA VESSEL, KNOW YOUR PLACE"

—Resistance graffiti

Now break the lock on the gate so you can get into the other side of the warehouse.

Move into the gated area and look for a business card sitting on a shelf on the right side. Pick it up to add it to your collection.

MacKinnon and his goons think they can charge a toll for passage through 36th Street. I think otherwise. I’d petition Logos for help if he and his men didn’t have such a gigantic stick up their collective asses.

No, let them fight their little war against corporate tyranny. This war is mine. I’ve outfitted a minivan with a pair of mounted autocannons on the sides for ranged combat, and a big flamethrower up front for anyone stupid enough to get close. I call it "The Syrian" after Hannibal’s great war elephant. With this thing I could take the EuroCorp Spire, but for now I’ll settle for 36th Street…

/ end of entry

Walk up onto the catwalk and use the controls on the yellow platform to move a hanging walkway over to this side of the warehouse.

Jump up onto the shelf. Then jump up onto the walkway. Sprint across the walkway and jump at the end to get over to the catwalk along the side of the warehouse.

Follow it to another yellow platform and use the controls to move the walkway back across the warehouse.

Now jump over the railing and onto the walkway. Cross over to the other side of the warehouse, sprinting and jumping to get to the catwalk.

Go to the right and then climb up a flight of stairs to get to a higher catwalk. Follow the catwalk to the far end of the warehouse.

As you are moving, you lose track of the signal from Lily’s chip.

Locate Lily Drawl’s Chip Signal

Head down another stairwell. Stop by the bums and look at the writing on the wall. Activate the DART overlay to see the rest of the propaganda message.

Living in the shadow of Uptown, the unchipped non-consumers have turned their backs on the care and guidance of the Syndicates. Crippled, with self-inflicted chip deactivations and illegal surgery, the population defy corporate mandate.

Continue to the bottom of the stairwell and break a lock on a gate to move into the basement. Make your way through the basement, looking for a hidden room off to the right.

Before you get to the end of the basement, move down a narrow corridor and go through the door. Inside you see a bum as well as a business card. Pick up the card to add it to your collection and also activate the boom box to get some new information.

Friday’s damage and lost laundry

Frankie told me about Jake’s gambling debts and drinking habits. I know I shouldn’t do this, but I’m willing to give the guy another chance. Also, all the damage to the bar, as well as the lost liquor, was paid for in full, even though I suspect that Jake got the money from someone else. However, I have explained to him that this is his last, last warning. In fact, I would have capped the guy myself if Frankie hadn’t stepped in.

In another matter, I’ve also received complaints from Candy and May-Belle that some of the underwear and "work tools" have disappeared from the laundry room. Ever since the eastside pumps stopped working, pushing sewage into the subway again, I suspect we have rats coming up from the lower basements, reaching the laundry room through the vents.(We should probably move the storage crates out of there). I will make sure we put pesticide in the water down there.

Jake, the ex-janitor

I regretfully have to inform you that we are understaffed on janitors. Jake, the guy from last week’s bar incident, was found last night down in the basement, licking pesticide from the water tank and chewing on the dirty laundry from yesterday’s show. He’s been fired and I’m sending you some of his toes as evidence for just punishment.

Excerpt: They call it creative destruction, but have you noticed, brothers and sisters, who it destroys every goddamn time? Have you noticed who it is that pays the price for every fresh consumer advance and new market opened?

Have you ever noticed how the promise of those advances and markets gets siphoned off, how when it comes time for the benefits to be shared out, we’re somehow never invited to that particular party? But why should we be? What, after all, could we bring to that party?

We had no capital to invest, no credit rating to commend us to their world. We only gave blood, sweat, toil and tears to build this nation—and those, my friends, are cheap materials, materials they can always get some more of, somewhere else.

So we watched our neighborhoods rot through with laissez-faire. We watched our jobs disappear overseas, and finally into the sky itself. We watched our friends and family disappear when they said or believed the wrong thing. We watched, and lived through, as our children were taken into the night. Children!

Our access to this future they say is ours has been stolen from under our nose. Well, no more! Creative destruction is the rule? That’s the rule? Then let it be so. Let them see the creative destruction we will bring to their doors. Let them feel it! Let them feel the rising force of our rage. Let them understand what it’s like when justice is subordinated to profit. It’s only going to end one way.

Yes, my friends, my brothers and sisters. It ends with change, and change is coming, creative destruction is coming, death is coming, and it’s coming to the Syndicates. So join with me now and celebrate its rise!

I think I saw an Agent today. I’m almost certain. I was with Satomi in the subway station at Cortlandt Street when I saw him. He was wearing a bulky trench coat just like on TV, and it looked like he was carrying something heavy underneath, probably a machine gun. He seemed to be waiting for someone, and didn’t really look like a killer. Satomi said he looked cute, and I kind of agree. He seemed very calm, but people around him were a bit nervous and tried to keep their distance. I wasn’t scared, though. After Satomi had left I thought about saying something to him, but then what looked like another Agent—a woman—came to him, and they talked for a bit and then quickly walked away. I want to be an Agent someday.

Things have been crazy here since Carrie got back from that Reykjavik conference. She came into the lab all excited—that part isn’t all that unusual I guess—and started talking about how her eyes had been opened, and how she had come to the realization that our research needed to move in a new direction if it was to "stay relevant." So she ordered everything scrapped. Months of work, just like that. The research leads protested, of course, but I guess she swayed them with her enthusiasm and her plans for the future, because eventually they relented.

After Carrie had left for the day, Mr. Papadopoulos showed up and asked what the hell we were doing. The leads tried to explain, but Papadopoulos said nothing like this had been cleared by his office, and ordered us to resume our old research. When Carrie returned the next morning, she said there had been a misunderstanding and told us to scrap everything—again. Then she left and as far as I know, no one has seen her since.

After a few hours a very angry Mr. Papadopoulos came back, shouted a lot and told us to stop, but by then more of the work had already been destroyed, including the prototypes. I heard Papadopoulos, his staff and the research leads had a long meeting about Carrie yesterday.
