Personal Defense Weapons (PDWs)

In Battlefield 4, the PDWs are now available only to the engineer class. These compact and lightweight weapons are best deployed in close quarters due to their short range. But what they lack in accuracy and damage output, they make up for in rate of fire. So consider choosing one of these weapons when tasked with assaulting or defending a building interior or other confined space.

Fundamentals

• The PDWs are now only available to the engineer class.
• Designed for close-quarter combat, the PDWs are most effective within 50 meters…and completely unreliable beyond 50 meters.
• PDWs have extremely high hip fire accuracy. Attach a Laser Sight to increase their hip fire potential…and blind your opponents.
• Due to their compact size and short barrel length, PDWs are raised quickly when aiming down sights.
• While carrying a PDW, peek around corners or over low cover to engage threats without exposing yourself.

MX4

Sporting a compact, sleek design, the Italian-manufactured MX4 is seen by many militaries and police agencies as a possible replacement for the legendary MP5. The weapon is fed by a 30-round box magazine inserted through the pistol grip and has garnered a solid reputation among its adopters as a reliable and highly maneuverable PDW. It comes equipped with a Reflex (RDS) optic, a Laser Sight, and Ergo Grip.

PP-2000

Though chambered in the standard 9x19mm caliber, the PP-2000 is designed to use Russian overpressure rounds at high velocity to penetrate body armor. The high muzzle velocity of the PP-2000 gives it a flatter trajectory than other 9mm weapons. Equipped with a 44-round magazine, the PP-2000 functions admirably in a CQB assault role.

UMP-45

German built, the UMP-45 is a fully automatic PDW noted for its versatility and optimal mobility. Essentially an improved version of the MP5, the UMP-45 is functionally similar but substantially cheaper to manufacture and includes several modern upgrades such as the top and forward accessory rail. But the weapon’s harsh recoil can take some getting used to.

CBJ-MS

The Swedish-designed CBJ-MS is a ultra-compact PDW fed by a 50-round drum magazine inserted through the weapon’s pistol grip. This weapon fires the new high-velocity 6.5x25mm CBJ round designed to penetrate body armor. Whether aiming down sights or firing from the hip, the CBJ-MS is a force to be reckoned with during close-quarter engagements.

PDW-R

Developed as a Personal Defense Weapon, the PDW-R differs from most other PDW concepts by utilizing the standard 5.56mm NATO rounds of the M16 or M4. This allows the PDW-R to share magazines and supply lines with standard troops while its short length and bullpup configuration allow the PDW-R to be easily operated in CQB. Though it lacks the accuracy of a rifle, the PDW-R has a greater punch at longer ranges than other PDWs.

Also known as the Scorpion, this Czech-designed PDW features an extremely high rate of fire, making it extremely lethal during close-quarter engagements. However, the blazing rate of fire comes at the cost of stability, exhibiting excessive recoil during prolonged auto bursts. When accuracy counts, switch to the weapon’s burst setting. Attaching an Angled Grip and Compensator can also help reduce recoil.

The Chinese JS2 PDW is highly maneuverable PDW thanks to its bullpup configuration. This makes it easy to round corners and sweep rooms during house-to-house urban fighting. Consider equipping it with a Laser Sight to boost its already impressive hip fire accuracy. The JS2’s generous 50-round magazine is always a welcome feature during intense fire fights.

Developed in Belgium as a PDW for vehicle crews, Special Forces, and Counter-Terrorist groups, the P90 is a compact and capable weapon system. The three forward rails allow an operator to mount a wide variety accessories and the 5.7x28mm armor piercing ammunition is fired at nearly rifle velocity. Standard with a 50-round magazine, the P90 is capable as an offensive CQB weapon for highly mobile personnel.

UMP-9

The UMP-9 utilizes the same frame and overall construction as the UMP-45, but is chambered for the smaller 9x19mm cartridge. As a result, the UMP-9 has a larger magazine capability and reduced recoil. However, the 9mm round has less stopping power than .45 ACP round, requiring more hits to produce lethal results. But this is somewhat offset by the weapon’s higher rate of fire.
