Field Upgrades

Succeeding during multiplayer often comes down to choosing the right tools for the job. That’s where the classes (also known as troop kits) come in to play. Before spawning into a game, you’re prompted to choose which class you wish to play as. If you’re a team player, your choice should be based on what is needed as opposed to which kit you want to play as. For example, if your base is being overrun by enemy tanks, choose the engineer kit and use rockets or mines to eliminate the threats. Although there are only four troop kits to choose from, the customization options are the most elaborate of any Battlefield game to date, allowing you to mix and match weapons, gadgets, and Field Upgrades to create a completely unique kit that compliments your style of play and meets the demands of any tactical situation.

The specializations from Battlefield 3 have been replaced with Field Upgrades, a concept first introduced in Battlefield 2142. Field Upgrades reward players with individual perks for performing squad-based actions, such as revives, repairs, and resupplies. Your progress through your chosen Field Upgrade path can be monitored on the meter just above the squad list on the left side of the HUD. Each Field Upgrade path has four levels of upgrades. Each time you perform an action that assists your squad, the Field Upgrade meter fills from left to right. New upgrades are awarded as the meter fills, allowing you to take advantage of all four upgrades once the meter is completely filled. However, every time your squad is wiped, progress on the Field Upgrade meter is lost, potentially leading to the loss of previously attained upgrades. By default, the Defensive and Shadow Field Upgrade paths are available to all players. But the Offensive and eight class-specific upgrade paths must be unlocked.
