Battlefield 4 eGuide Weapons

Grenades

In Battlefield 4 there are now several types of hand-thrown grenades available while customizing your soldier’s loadout. By default, all classes begin with the M67 Frag grenade. But more grenade types are unlocked throughout your multiplayer career—the more frequently you score with grenades, the more you unlock. You can only carry one or two grenades at a time, depending on which one is equipped in your loadout. But the Grenades Field Upgrade allows you to carry one extra.

M67 Frag

The M67 Frag is a standard-issue fragmentation grenade, available to all classes at the start of your multiplayer career. The M67 is most effective against infantry, but they can also inflict minor damage against light-skinned vehicles—just don’t try taking out a tank with them. The M67 doesn’t explode on impact. Instead, they tend to roll around until the timed fuse triggers the explosion. So keep this in mind when tossing an M67—they will bounce off surfaces and roll down slopes. Make a habit of tossing this grenade in buildings prior to entering, especially if you suspect an enemy presence.

  • Description: Standard timed fuse hand grenade with all around performance and balanced range and damage.
  • Unlock: Default

V40 Mini

The V40 Mini performs just like the M67 Frag, utilizing a similar time-delay fuse. But their smaller size allows you to carry three V40 Minis instead of only one—achieve the Grenades Field Upgrade to carry four. While more grenades is always a good thing, the explosive payload of each device is reduced, resulting in a smaller blast radius than their bigger M67 cousin. However, these miniature grenades can be lobbed greater distances, perfect for suppressing distant opponents.

  • Description: Mini hand grenade that can be thrown farther than the standard M67 but with reduced blast yield. Three of these grenades can be carried.
  • Unlock: 1,000 Grenade Score

RGO Impact

Unlike standard hand grenades, the RGO Impact Grenade explodes upon striking any surface, giving opponents no time to run away. Given the grenade’s significantly smaller blast radius, it requires greater precision on behalf of the thrower to place these as close to the intended target as possible—for best results, throw it directly at your target. Be extremely careful when deploying these grenades in close quarters. Any contact the grenade makes during flight will cause it to detonate, potentially injuring or killing you.

  • Description: Russian RGO Impact grenade that explodes shortly after impacting a surface. A smaller grenade with a lower blast yield, two of these grenades can be carried at one time.
  • Unlock: 2,000 Grenade Score

M34 Incendiary

Designed primarily as a signaling device, these nasty grenades emit a shower of red-hot white phosphorous, injuring (and potentially killing) anyone unlucky enough to be caught within its wide and persistent blast radius. During combat, the M34 is best deployed in tight chokepoints such as hallways, doorways, and stairwells, effectively halting the advance of enemy troops. The device continues emitting white phosphorus for approximately 3-4 seconds, leaving behind a thick cloud of black smoke that lingers for several seconds longer. Don’t expect to score many kills with this grenade, as victims can often step outside its blast radius before suffering lethal injuries. Instead, use it primarily as a deterrent when defending chokepoints.

  • Description: Incendiary hand grenade that creates a cloud of intense burning particles for a short duration. Particles stick to soldiers and will continue to burn outside the original fire.
  • Unlock: 3,000 Grenade Score

M18 Smoke

Previously, smoke could only be deployed by the assault and support classes. But now, through the addition of the M18 Smoke Grenade, all classes can deploy smoke screens, ideal for concealing squad movements when there is a lack of cover. Smoke remains essential in Rush, while arming and disarming M-COM stations. But smoke is also vital in the new Obliteration and Defuse game modes, offering concealment while retrieving the bomb or when arming and disarming objectives. Or use smoke offensively to disorient opponents while picking them off through the IRNV (IR 1X) or FLIR (IR 2X) optics.

  • Description: Timed fuse hand-thrown grenade that creates a blinding cloud of white smoke that also blocks spotting.
  • Unlock: 4,000 Grenade Score

M84 Flashbang

The M84 Flashbang is a popular tactical aid deployed by SWAT and hostage rescue teams, serving as a deterrent while clearing rooms and performing dynamic entries in close-quarter environments. In some respects, the Flashbang is more effective than its more lethal counterparts, blinding opponents for approximately three seconds, leaving them vulnerable. The duration an opponent is blinded varies depending on their proximity to device when it detonates. The direction an opponent is facing is also significant—if an opponent’s back is turned, they won’t be blinded as long. Toss Flashbangs into rooms occupied by opponents just prior to rushing in and mowing down the opposition—this is an easy (but somewhat cheap) way to score knife kills too.

  • Description: Hand grenade with a suppressive Flashbang effect to temporarily blind enemies in close quarters.
  • Unlock: 5,000 Grenade Score

Hand Flare

The least intimidating of the grenades, this standard Hand Flare can serve a variety of purposes on the battlefield. When operating in dark environments, use it to light up rooms or blind opponents, particularly those equipped with infrared optics. Or if your squad is pinned, toss it toward enemies to get the attention of teammates. The Hand Flare is highly visible over great distances, including from the air. Use the Hand Flare to designate strafing zones for friendly jets and helicopters.

  • Description: Emergency Red Flare that burns to light up dark space and provides a small blinding effect.
  • Unlock: 6,000 Grenade Score
