Offensive Scouting Report

• QB Eli Manning really flourished last season in a new offensive system. Look for him to build on it with the young talent surrounding him, and it should lead to more wins. Focus on quick passes to help out the offensive line and keep his completion percentage up.
• The Giants got an excellent upgrade by signing HB Shane Vereen in the off-season. Use him to open up the passing game out of the backfield.
• The Giants had rookie Odell Beckham Jr. explode onto the scene last season, but defenses will be looking out for him this year. Allow his presence in the lineup to open things up for WR Rueben Randle and ease the comeback for WR Victor Cruz, who still has dancing left to do.

Defensive Scouting Report

• The Giants’ defensive line will need to develop some young talent this season, or they can’t afford to let Jason Pierre-Paul change uniforms. Hopefully some of their signings will help them get after the passer, or blitzing your LBs will be necessary.
• LB Jon Beason has had a nice resurgence in New York, but he is rarely at 100 percent due to injuries. The Giants will need their free agent signings of Victor Butler and J.T. Thomas to be a scheme fit for this unit to be a strength.
• The Giants’ secondary lost a veteran leader with Antrel Rolle leaving; thankfully, they drafted a promising young player in Landon Collins. On the outside, their CBs are big and fast, which means they shouldn’t require much help from the young safeties

Key Players

• Despite his size, Beckham is the best in the NFL at going up and making spectacular catches.
• Don’t forget to get him the ball on short routes across the middle so he can pick up yards after the catch.

• DRC is one of our favorite players in the game with his blend of size and speed.
• Get the most value out of him by not calling press, because his rating is only a 62.

• Flowers is one of the stronger tackles in the game and should be able to get a push against almost anyone.
• While it would be nice to sit him for development, the Giants’ line needs him to start right away due to injuries.

• Washington is one of the bigger targets on the Giants’ roster and should be used to attack the seam.
• The Giants have tremendous depth at WR already, but try to find Washington a spot in a few formations.

BEST RUN: Singleback Ace Pair Slot — HB Stretch

Setup:

• Motion the slot WR or TE.
• The HB Stretch is a staple run of the Giants’ playbook no matter what the formation. Look for the mismatch and playmaker the run off that edge.
• Expect opposing defenses to pay lots of attention to the two WRs in the left slot. Try adding some linemen to the right side for extra blocking.

Advanced Setup:

• Playmaker the run to the left.

Setup/Reads:

• Against zone coverage look to throw a low pass over the middle to the HB. This is the throw that makes this play a winner.
• Against man-to-man coverage, time the throw with the TE’s cut or wait for the slant over the middle.
• Against the blitz, hit the short route to the left and allow your playmakers to rack up yards after the catch.

Advanced Setup:

• Slant the far right WR.

BEST RUN DEFENSE: 5-2 Normal — Cover 2

Setup:

• Make sure to spread the line and crash it down to make it an extremely solid front to run against.
• Use this as an every-down defense in the red zone. Make sure to shade underneath and change your deep zones to hook zones.

• The DE dropping into a hook zone

BEST PASS DEFENSE: Nickel Nascar — Cover 4

Setup:

• The NASCAR formation should generate pressure without blitzing. Otherwise use the Double A Gap set in the Nickel formation.
• You can shade your coverage to the left or right depending on where the open side of the field is. This is one of the few times to shade.
• Your CBs in deep zones have enough speed to call press before the snap and still cover deep — use this to change the pre-snap look.
