MUT Defensive Style Builds: Zone Defense

General Strategy

Defenses that build to the strength of their players are the most successful in MUT. By looking for players in the LB corps and secondary that have solid zone coverage, you can really build an excellent defense. Learn how to use coverage shading, because it is one of the most important ways to help your players be in great position after the snap. By mixing up your coverage calls, you can send pressure and disguise your looks, which will leave the offense guessing all game long.

Strengths

  • Cover 4 is a great coverage that forces offenses to connect underneath, and it can frustrate even the best teams, especially those with a long-pass style.
  • Height is a crucial factor for zone defenders; don’t let an opponent target your smaller players one-on-one downfield.
  • Consider calling “show blitz” before the snap to slow down the run game up the middle.

Weaknesses

  • Every zone coverage has a weakness, so make sure to switch up your play calls and to find a rangy free safety to help with Cover 3 calls.
  • In short-yardage situations, your zones can drift away from the line and allow quick passes, so try man coverage.
  • Certain formations can cause tough alignments for zone coverages. Try using base align to balance it out.
