The draft started out nicely with Calvin Johnson still being available late in the first round. Although he is nearing the end of his prime, his size is exactly what our scheme calls for. He was selected over younger talent like Odell Beckham Jr., who was still available. We were surprised to see Le’Veon Bell still available but it seemed that the computer was undervaluing him; Bell is so multitalented that it was like getting two picks in one. QBs went super fast, and we didn’t have the chance to get a top-tier player, so we didn’t mind waiting. Instead we will try to harness the ability of RGIII and brought in a strong-armed backup just in case. Our offensive line is extremely young and strong up the middle, as that is where our main run attack will go. We picked up a great run-blocking TE along with a sure-handed pass catcher for third downs. We selected Emmanuel Sanders for his ability to run after the catch and turn shorter passes into big gains. We closed out our WR corps with a rookie to develop heading forward who can play special teams for now.

Our defense got a scheme in the second round with FS Harrison Smith, who is a big player with a zone coverage skill set. From there we wanted to fill out our defense and went with LB Thomas Davis. He is a bit on the older side but has proven to be a great player, especially in zone. We reached a bit early for CB Brandon Browner, but we loved his size and skill set. We will need to work on his penalty trait. We loaded up great young depth at CB with size and zone as the focus. Our LB corps finished out nicely with some solid veterans with high play recognition and some young stars in waiting. On the defensive line we went for one anchor with Isaac Sopoaga and one DT who can rush the passer. We loaded up with rookies at RE. All have different skills, and the smart bet is that at least one will hit! We looked for a speed rusher off the LE that we could drop into coverage, and he will be a key to our success.
