Offensive Scouting Report

• QB Blake Bortles had a decent start after taking over for Chad Henne last season. Continue to improve his completion percentage with easy throws and to help cut down on turnovers.
• Rookie HB T.J. Yeldon is most deserving of the carries in the backfield. While you have some nice backups with unique styles, work on turning him into a franchise back. The offensive line is coming along nicely and should help.
• The receiving corps is still very young after a big draft last season. Think young and figure out which players really fit with your scheme. Cecil Shorts has moved on, and a new leader will need to step up.

Defensive Scouting Report

• The Jags’ defensive line has finesse off the edge and power in the middle. Make sure to note who can stop the run, otherwise you may never get into a long-yardage situation where you can tee off on the opposing passer.
• LB Paul Posluszny is the anchor in the middle of the defense, but Telvin Smith proved last season he has what it takes to become a starter. Continue to develop him and look for a veteran at LOLB until the draft.
• The Jaguars have a the initial pieces for a solid man coverage secondary. This will all be made easier if the pass rush can get to the QB.

Key Players

• Thomas adds great size to a TE group already featuring a big body in Marcedes Lewis.
• Find Thomas on third down and let him become Bortles’s favorite target in the red zone.

• Marks is a perfect fit for the Jags’ scheme. He wouldn’t be able to stop the run in a 3-4 system at DT.
• Marks is built to rush the passer from the interior of the line.

  

• Fowler is a promising young talent to rush off the edge. His speed means he will be perfect in Gus Bradley’s defensive scheme.
• Fowler suffered an injury during training camp, so focus your development on rookie T.J. Yeldon until he returns.

• Daniels shouldn’t start over Johnathan Cyprien, but there is room for both of them on the field in some formations.
• The real key for Daniels is the 89 Hit Power; this is perfect for special teams. Keep developing him, especially his agility.

Setup:

• Motion the inside WR across (optional).
• We prefer to use our most athletic back. As long as the blocking is sound, we won’t need to break many tackles.
• Wait as long as possible before breaking the run outside.
• You can always call the stretch from this formation if you want to run to the open side of the field.

Advanced Setup:

• Playmaker this run to the opposite side.

Setup/Reads:

• Against zone coverage look to throw a high pass into the seam to the TE. Find your favorite route for the solo WR on the left (slant).
• To make this more of an every-down formation, continue to hit the drag over the middle and RAC (run after the catch).
• This formation is extremely difficult to line up against and can force defenses to forget about blitzing.

Advanced Setup:

• Utilize the Twin TE package.

Setup:

• Unless it is short yardage, commit to the pass before the play; you should still stop the run and will limit any damage from play-action passes.
• Make sure that the defenders dropping into zone coverage on the play are your more athletic defenders.
• Do not crash the defensive line on this play. But you can base align before the snap.
