Picking up roughly ten years after the events of the first game in the Rune Factory series, Rune Factory 2: A Fantasy Harvest Moon took place in the city of Alvarna, along the coast. The gameplay was split between two generations. During the first generation, the player took on the role of Kyle, an amnesiac boy who farmed his way to a pleasant life with a happy family near a school that he built. As the son or daughter, the player then set out on a massive quest during the second generation in effort to discover the reason for their father’s disappearance.

Rune Factory 2: A Fantasy Harvest Moon contained four sprawling dungeons, filled with monsters, and each locked to a single season, as in the original game. The game reintroduced the concept of rival couples and children, a request system, and the ability to put monsters to work on the farm or to assist the player in combat. A robust magic system utilized various spell books specializing in music, skills, and attack magic.

Rune Factory 2: A Fantasy Harvest Moon offered three Wi-Fi modes that let you share experiences with other players - Item Exchange, Monster Meadow and Sugoroku. Item Exchange was a returning feature from the previous title; however, this time, certain items would transform into better objects and weapons when traded. In Monster Meadow, players’ pet monsters could meet and interact with one another, building a stronger bond with the main character. Sugoroku, a board game for 2 to 4 players, would offer items, stat bonuses and the occasional stat penalty depending on which tiles were landed on.
