As you may have guessed from the box art, Harvest Moon: More Friends of Mineral Town focuses around a female protagonist. Though much of the setting and gameplay remained largely unchanged from the original release eighteen months prior, the story was just one of several new features.
Players took on the role of a young city-dwelling girl who, wanting to move to the countryside, decided to buy a farm she saw for sale in the newspaper. Thomas, the mayor of Mineral Town, was all too happy to welcome her to the village. A major new addition to the game gave players the ability to earn points toward a Farm Degree. By raising crops, fishing, cooking, and interacting with animals and villagers, the player could earn 100,000 points toward a special diploma!
Putting the “more” in Harvest Moon: More Friends of Mineral Town was the ability for the player to marry not only any of the five previous rivals (now bachelors), but three new bachelors as well. Kappa, the Gourmet, and Won could also be married; however, only Won would move in with the player if married. It was possible to have a child after three seasons of marriage, but this time, the player had a daughter instead of a son.

- Seven collectible rings were added to the game. Finding them earned the player Heroine Points.
- Befriending Won didn’t just earn the ability to buy rare items and sell to him; he also let friends play a special mini-game with him!
