Harvest Moon: Light of Hope A 20th Anniversary Celebration Guide › Restoring the Lighthouse

Prologue: Light of Hope

Your First Day

On Character Creation…

If you’re new to Harvest Moon and wondering what the differences are between playing as a boy and playing as a girl, know that this choice only affects who you can marry. There are five potential spouses for each gender in the form of bachelorettes and bachelors. All else is equal, and both sexes get to witness all of the friendship-building cutscenes.

The second step in creating your character concerns your birthday. Though you don’t receive any gifts, the other villagers cheerfully wish you a happy birthday. Your only consideration here should be in picking a date that doesn’t fall on a festival day, as that could lessen the time you have to interact with other villagers.

After washing ashore during a mighty storm, you wake inside the home of Jeanne, a promising herbal doctor and local lighthouse keeper. Though you remember being helped by a girl with blue eyes and short purple hair, the description doesn’t ring a bell for Jeanne. Which is odd, considering nearly all of the island’s inhabitants left after a massive storm several years prior. Sensing a chance to help, you volunteer to live on the island. Jeanne is thrilled to hear this and can’t wait to show you a place to live—a farm at the edge of town.

Jeanne shows you to the farm and provides you with a Hoe, Watering Can, and 10x Cabbage Seeds. Now it’s time to learn the basics. Follow Jeanne’s instructions and press the Action Button to till four plots in the grass with the Hoe (you can till more after the next dialogue break). Approach the dirt square and press the Action Button to select the Cabbage Seeds. Hold the Action Button to spread seeds across multiple plots. It’s possible to spread up to nine seeds at once in a 3x3 grid.

Fill the Watering Can at the nearby well as instructed, then water each of the seeds you planted. The base-level Watering Can only waters one plot at a time, so you must water each individual seed. Doing this every day takes time, but you’ll have an upgraded Watering Can with better range soon enough. Water the remaining seeds you planted, then head inside, as instructed. Despite it being only 10:00 a.m., Jeanne insists that you go to bed, so climb in and get a good night’s rest. Day two will be much busier!

Context-Sensitive Tools

There’s no need to worry about selecting tools from the inventory before going to work on the farm. Simply highlight the chosen object or plot on the ground and use the Action Button. The game automatically equips the character with the Hoe if the ground is untilled, seeds if the ground is tilled (you can cycle through available seed types using the Shoulder Buttons), the Watering Can if the seeds are planted, and available Fertilizer if the ground has been watered. Similarly, the Axe, Fishing Rod, and Hammer are also automatically equipped when targeting a tree, water, or a rock, respectively.

Study Up!

Access the bookcase beside the bed to browse your individual gameplay records or to read through a collection of gameplay tips. The tips are quite extensive and serve to explain many of the game’s systems.

The First Stone Tablet

You’re awoken by a strange voice calling for help from outside. It’s Spring 2 at 6:00 a.m., your normal wake-up time from now on, and you rush to investigate. Follow the instructions and pull the weed from the ground with the Action Button. Doing so reveals the FirstStone Tablet, along with Rowan, the Harvest Sprite of Crops. Rowan doesn’t know anything about the Stone Tablet, but suggests you ask Jeanne about it.

Water the crops you planted yesterday so you don’t forget, and consider planting the other two Cabbage Seeds now that you can pull weeds. Head west from the crops and exit the farm via the gap in the fence. Follow the path north and climb the steps to forage any flowers you see. You find either Tulips or Marguerite flowers in spring—save any Tulips you forage, as they’ll be needed before long. Similarly, pick up any Bamboo Shoots you find on the ground and save them for free Stamina replenishment later.

Enter the house on the hill north of the lighthouse, near the garden, and talk to Jeanne. She quickly recognizes the pattern on the tablet and leads you to the lighthouse, where she says a guardian lives and shines light upon the island to make it prosper. Sadly, the lighthouse hasn’t shone in several years. At the base of the lighthouse are five empty panels the size of the Stone Tablet. Place the first tablet into one of the empty circles to restore a bit of the lighthouse’s power.

Between Jeanne and Rowan, your mission becomes clear: you need to find the other four Stone Tablets to revive the Harvest Goddess. In doing so, you’ll restore all of Beacon Town and build a thriving island community in which to grow old.
