The first game in the series to release on the Sony PSP was a direct port of the PlayStation game Harvest Moon: Back to Nature and the female protagonist version of Harvest Moon: Back to Nature. This game was also reconfigured into the Friends of Mineral Town games for the GameBoy Advance.
Harvest Moon: Boy & Girl allowed players to choose between a boy and girl—Destiny and Fate, respectively—and strive to save the farm and get married. The game had five bachelors to go along with the five bachelorettes popular from the original game.
The game featured several key differences when playing as a girl that English-speaking players hadn’t experienced in the original Harvest Moon: Back to Nature. These included a retelling of the festivals from a girl’s perspective, a revamped storyline, a different-colored house (pink instead of blue), and a Beauty Star function that made it possible to get the bachelors to like the girl character faster. By reading fashion magazines, getting to sleep early, using the mirror and hot spring, and eating healthy, the girl character gained additional Beauty Stars. The more you had, the faster a bachelor’s affection would grow.
