The first true spin-off in the Harvest Moon franchise came in 2007, in the form of a puzzle game for the Nintendo DS. Puzzle de Harvest Moon challenged the player to grow and harvest crops for points in a race against three AI-controlled players (or other friends via WLAN) competing on the same field. Gameplay took place in real-time at a frenetic place, often resulting in frantic scribbling with the DS stylus as players raced to harvest as many crops as they could.

A big part of the game’s appeal was that players could sabotage one another, thus making it important to use your pet dog to protect your crops. Other animals earned you bonuses too, while often obscuring the opposition’s view of the field. Puzzle de Harvest Moon contained multiple single-player modes, a two-versus-two mode, and also the ability to play multiplayer with a single cartridge. The game was known for its challenging gameplay, as well as its unique use of the characters from Harvest Moon: Back to Nature.
