Gus’s Smithy, located not far from the mine in the mountain, is where you head to process ore into building materials, metals, and gems. Gus is also skilled with an anvil and can upgrade your tools for a substantial cost. Gus doesn’t buy anything from you—he’s not even a fan of gems—and he doesn’t sell any items that can be sold, but you should visit him each and every time you exit the mine.
As discussed in the Mining for Profit chapter, the single best way to make money in Harvest Moon: Light of Hope is by mining. Take your piles of ore to Gus, pay him to process them into valuable metals and gems, and sell the gems to Sam for mass riches.
The following tables detail each of the tool upgrades available at Gus’s Smithy. We recommend upgrading the Axe, Hammer, and Hoe first. The Expert Axe allows you to chop Hardwood Lumber, and the upgraded Hammer and Hoe make it possible to explore the depths of the mine. Upgrading Watering Cans and Fishing Rods can come later.
