Raising Livestock

Growing vegetables and fruits is only half the fun of running a farm. You’ve also got animals to care for. After all, it wouldn’t be a farm without fresh Milk and Eggs! Fortunately, caring for chickens and other animals is straightforward, and Sofia and Gabriel teach you almost everything you need to know when you buy your animals. Their advice comes free, along with the Milker, Shears, and Pitchfork.

Raising livestock requires four daily steps:

• Feed your animals every day. Either put Fodder or Animal Feed in their troughs, or let them outside to graze on mature grass you’ve planted.
• Clean up their mess. The Compost you collect can lead to sickness if left unattended in the Chicken Coop or Animal Barn. Collect it each and every day to keep your animals healthy.
• Interact with your animals every day to keep them happy. Pick up your chickens, and pet and brush your livestock.
• Collect the Eggs every day so there’s room for tomorrow’s Eggs. Return to the barn after feeding animals to collect Milk, Wool, or fur.

Upgrade the size of your Chicken Coop and Animal Barn as soon as you can to ensure you have plenty of animals producing materials for you. Sofia is always happy to sell you more animals, but you can use the incubator and Miracle Potion for any duplicates you wish to have. Always place an Egg in the incubator whenever there’s an opening, to get a free chicken. Similarly, consider using the Miracle Potion to impregnate your livestock when there’s room available, especially if you don’t have a pressing need for the Milk or Wool it produces.

You’re free to buy and sell animals from Sofia as often as you like, though she only buys healthy animals from you. Purchase medicine from Sofia’s Livestock as soon as Gabriel alerts you to an illness, so you catch it before it spreads.

There are several options when it comes to feeding your animals. All animals and chickens can be fed the same food—Animal Feed—but you can make your own feed, purchase it from Sofia’s Livestock, or plant grass and allow your animals to graze. At 30G per bag, Animal Feed can really get expensive early on, though buying it in bulk from Sofia’s Livestock is the easiest way to ensure you always have plenty of food on hand. Keep in mind, though, that higher-quality feed yields higher-quality Eggs, Milk, and other products. The only way to get Great Animal Feed or Delicious Animal Feed is to make it at the Windmill. Lastly, animals like to go outside and graze. Consider fencing a large area of planted grass and allowing your animals outside on nice-weather days.
