Escape from the Kyln is another of the Toy Box Games included with Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes (2.0 Edition). To play it, just place the hexagonal Power Disc onto the Disney Infinity base and you gain access to this game. Escape from Kyln is essentially a Toy Box dungeon crawler with a Guardians of the Galaxy theme.
Your character is stuck in the Kyln and is about to break out of a cell. Escape is the objective of this game.
Getting Started
When you play Escape from the Kyln for the first time, you are put right into the introduction level. This is a tutorial to help you learn how to play the game. You start off right in the middle of the escape. As the character you have selected and placed on the Disney Infinity base, you have to save a prisoner as your first mission. After learning the controls from the on-screen instructions, move forward and defeat three enemies.
Go after the enemies to save the prisoner who will become your sidekick.
After defeating the enemies, the prisoner becomes your sidekick. A sidekick can be very useful in this game. They follow you around and will automatically attack enemies. In addition they can get into small spaces and find items or complete tasks. Shortly after gaining your sidekick, you need to use your new ally to help deactivate a shield. Pick up and throw your sidekick through an access panel. The sidekick then deactivates the shield protecting a security key that you need to continue.
Pick up and throw sidekicks into these access panels to do things you can’t do on your own.
The Kyln uses energy fields to prevent prisoners from escaping. Therefore, in order to continue your escape, you need to find security keys. Most are protected by some sort of shield. You need to figure out how to deactivate the shield in order to get them. Your sidekick can come in handy, just like for the first key. Walk over to the key. The energy field blocking your path will shut down and you can continue.
Look for these security keys to shut down energy fields. Most are protected by shields, which you must find a way to deactivate.
As you are advancing through the Kyln, you can find loot chests. Attack them to break them open and you receive some type of loot for your sidekick. Collect all of this that you can find and you are awarded it at the end of the level. There are different types of loot that you can use to outfit your sidekicks. These loot chests are scattered about the Kyln and are often not on the direct route to your objectives. Therefore, you need to do bit of exploring to find them all.
Look for these loot chests and break them open to find some sidekick loot.
Your goal for each level is to get to the exit. Once you have deactivated any energy fields in your path and made your way clear across the level, you come across the circular-shaped gate that automatically opens when you approach it. This is the exit and represents the end of the level. Walk through the gate and all of the sidekick loot you have collected will be unlocked and awarded to you. Finally, walk through the portal to exit the level.
Pass through the exit gate at the end of the level and all of the sidekick loot you collected will be unlocked.
The Hub
Once you complete the tutorial level, the portal brings you to the Hub. At this location, you can do several different things. First, you can recruit a sidekick. There are several of them wandering around the Hub area. Once you find a suitable sidekick, you can outfit them. Then you can enter one of the doors to explore one of the cell blocks.
The Hub is where you pick and outfit sidekicks to help you explore the cell blocks to make good your escape from the Kyln.
There are several different sidekicks in the Hub. As you approach one, their stats will appear over their heads. Each sidekick has three different stats that consist of an icon and a number. The sword icon and number show you how much damage or healing the sidekick can inflict. The shield icon and number indicate how much damage the sidekick can take before passing out. Finally, the eye icon and number represent the sidekick’s ability to uncover hidden secrets and enter access panels.
Check out the values of the sidekicks. Recruit one with a good balance of statistics.
Once you have recruited a sidekick, it is time to outfit your new friend. Walk over to the sidekick outfitter and activate it. Here you can assign your sidekick a helmet, a weapon, and some armor. As you explore the cell blocks and open up loot chests, you will unlock more equipment for outfitting your sidekick. The equipment can boost one, two, or even three of your sidekick’s statistics and make them more effective.
Outfit your sidekick with the look you have collected while exploring.
Now that you have a fully outfitted sidekick, you are ready to explore the cell blocks. After finishing the tutorial, the doorway to Cell Block 1 is unlocked. After you complete that cell block, you unlock the doorway to the next cell block. You must advance through all eight cell blocks to escape the Kyln.
Enter the doors that you have unlocked to explore the eight cell blocks. The final cell block will get you out of the Kyln for good.
Exploring the Cell Blocks
The main part of the game is exploring the cell blocks. Your objectives in the cell blocks are to get to the exit and to find as much loot as possible. In order to get to the exit, you need to find several keys or complete tasks to deactivate energy fields to progress through the level. Along the way, defeat a lot of enemies to earn all colors of Sparks. When you first enter a cell block, you are in an entrance area. There is a sidekick outfitter here in case you want to make any last minute equipment changes. Plus there are access panels for throwing your sidekick into and Spark capsules lying about. Look around this area and get some goodies while you wait for the level to be created.
The entrance area can be explored for some Sparks while you are waiting to begin.
While moving through the cell block after passing through the entrance gate, you will trigger Kyln braziers. The barrel-shaped lights can cause enemies to spawn in your area. When you see colored targets appear on the ground, get ready for a fight. That is where Sakaarans will appear and begin attacking you. In addition, as you walk near cells, the prisoners inside may break out and attack. So you not only have to fight the guards, but also the prisoners as well. The prisoners consist of Symbiotes and Frost Giants. Don’t think of it as danger—think of it as an opportunity to collect some more Sparks!
When you see these targets appear, get ready for an attack.
Other prisoners can also break out of cells and attack you.
A yellow hexagonal icon appears, showing you the direction of your next objective. If you just want to get through the cell block as quickly as possible, follow this icon. However, if you wan to collect as much loot as possible, explore the areas off to the sides of the direct path. That is where a lot of the game can take place. The choice is up to you.
Your sidekick cannot enter some access panels because his or her search stat is not high enough. The sidekick will let you know which panels he or she can enter.
During your explorations, you will move past series of braziers and trigger a security area lockdown. As a result, an energy field will activate and block your path to the next part of the cell block. In order to deactivate the energy field, you need to collect a number of security keys—usually two or more of them.
When there is a security area lockdown, an energy field blocks your path.
These keys are not just lying around. They are protected by shields that must be shut down. Sometimes your sidekick can help you take care of the shields by letting you throw him or her through an access panel. Other security keys require you to defeat enemies or turrets to lower the shields. There are several different types of shields with different requirements to deactivate them so you can get the security keys.
Some keys are protected by a shield linked to pressure plates. You must step on and deactivate each pressure plate. However if you, your sidekick, or an enemy steps on the pressure plates again, they will reactivate. So pick up your sidekick while doing this and your life will be a lot easier.
As you fight off enemies, if your sidekick’s health bar is depleted, your sidekick will pass out. Don’t worry, your sidekick is not dead. You just need to revive your sidekick. Walk over to them and press the button that appears on the screen to bring your sidekick back into the fight. While reviving takes some time, it also has another cost—your character’s health. After reviving a sidekick, your character’s health bar will decrease. However, no matter how low your health, you can always revive a sidekick and still have some health remaining.
Revive your sidekicks when they are passed out from taking too much damage. You need them to continue through the cell blocks and they can help you defeat enemies along the way. Plus every hero needs a sidekick.
Once you have retrieved all the security keys and deactivated the energy fields, you must advance to the exit gate. After passing through the gate and receiving your sidekick loot, move through the portal to get back to the Hub safe zone and unlock the doorway to the next cell block.
Getting to the cell block exit is your main objective.
When you return to the Hub, you can recruit another sidekick in exchange for your current sidekick. Since you unlocked some sidekick loot in the cell block, be sure to visit the sidekick outfitter and give your sidekick some more powerful equipment. Then when you are ready, go explore the next cell block.
Don’t forget to outfit your sidekick with the latest equipment you found in the last cell block.
As you progress through the cell blocks, you will find that the Kyln has creative ways of protecting their security keys. Always follow the shield from the key to an object to determine what you have to do to deactivate the shield so you can get to the key.
Your character must stand on the pad for a number of seconds in order to deactivate this shield. Enemies will keep spawning until this is accomplished. The counter at the top of the screen lets you know how much time is remaining and only counts down while you are on the pad.
This key is protected by enemies. Defeat them so you can collect the key.
Exploration Survival Mode
This doorway appears at the Hub after you exit Cell Block 1. This game offers you a chance to explore new locations and defeat enemies that are randomly generated each time. As a result, you never get the same game twice.
The doorway to the Exploration Survival Mode is located next to the Tutorial doorway.
When you begin this game, the levels are generated while you wait and watch.
In this mode, there is only one objective—search for and destroy all enemies. There is a timer at the top of the screen keeping track of how long it takes to accomplish this. Unlike in the cell block levels, there are no loot chests and your sidekick is only needed to help you defeat the enemies.
Search for enemies and then defeat them. Use the minimap in the lower left corner to see in which direction the remaining enemies are located.
Once you clear a level of all enemies, the game is not over. Another level is randomly generated and then populated with enemies. Go find them and defeat them.
How many levels can you complete and how long will it take you? The game will keep creating new levels for you.
