You cannot define a Sim’s lifetime only by fulfilled wishes and the company they keep. Sims desire to grow in other ways, too.

Careers are one way in which a Sim’s life is given structure and meaning, but there are no new careers in World Adventures . (And why would there be? These are vacations!)

Another way Sims are defined is by the skills they develop and hopefully master.

World Adventures introduces three new skills: Martial Arts, Nectar Making, and Photography. The only way to start developing these skills is through travel.

You cannot start the Martial Arts skill without leaving home. Sure, you could buy a book about Martial Arts and then read it on the comfort of your sofa back in Riverview—but you still had to at least visit China to buy the book from the merchant.

Development

There is no limit on who can learn any of these skills. Certain traits make it easier to develop some of these skills.

For example, the Photographer’s Eye accelerates the development of the Photography skill. But specific traits are not required to start learning a skill. All it requires is drive and time.

There are a handful of ways to develop a skill. Some are learned and further refined by reading books related to the skill. Some skills are developed by simply doing.

Working with a Training Dummy builds the Martial Arts skill. Wielding a camera around the neighborhood develops the Photography skill.

Squashing grapes in your cellar with your very own Nectar Maker improves the Nectar Making skill.

Use these tips to speed skill development:

Sims in a good mood develop a skill slightly faster.

Expensive equipment does help develop a skill. The cheap camera suffices for first developing the Photography skill. But as you get into the top half of the skill, you really should splurge on a better camera.

Use community equipment when just starting out to save a little cash. You can use Training Dummies and Board Breakers at the dojo in China for free while visiting. The same goes for the public Nectar Maker at France’s Nectary.

Unless you feel pressed for time to start developing a new skill, save books on the subject for skill levels higher than 2. Reading a book reduces the amount of time needed to attain the next level. However, this is within reason.

Reading the beginner’s level skill book for Martial Arts is not going to do you a tremendous amount of good when working toward level 9.

Check the bookstores in each destination for volumes that will help with skill development.

Martial Arts

Sims desiring strong minds as well as bodies should consider traveling to China to learn the new Martial Arts skill. This skill requires serious training, not just on specific martial arts equipment, but also in sparring matches with other Sims.

While much of this skill is developed in China due to the prevalence of other Sims who share it, it can be practiced at home if you buy equipment.

Development Benefits

There are two ways to begin learning the Martial Arts skill—and both exist only in China. The first way is to purchase a Martial Arts skill book from the bookstore in the Forbidden City.

The other way to start learning the Martial Arts skill is to practice on a Training Dummy. Direct your Sim to the Training Dummy and choose the Practice interaction.

Your Sim will start attacking the Training Dummy, but badly at first. Stick with it, though, because over time, your Sim will get better. Soon, they are smacking that Training Dummy around like nobody’s fool.

Once your Sim reaches level 2 of the skill, they can begin training on the Board Breaker. This set-up allows them to practice a concentrated chop on a board placed between two blocks.

You can place various materials on the Board Breaker.

The easiest to break is the foam board, so even though you can try any of the boards, it’s best to start here. As you advance, try out the other boards, such as balsa wood, oak, thin stone, and space rock.

When your Sim reaches level 5 of the skill, they unlock the new Meditate action. Meditation has multiple benefits. The first is that meditating improves mood.

The Sim earns the new Meditative Focus moodlet, which is positive. The longer you meditate, the longer that moodlet lasts.

Meditating also removes many negative moodlets: Anxious to Advance, Bored,Creeped Out, Disappointed, Disgusted, Embarrassed, Horrified, Humiliated, Mourning, Offended, Rejected, Rude Awakening, Stir Crazy, Stood Up, and Upset.

All can be banished by meditating. You just need to do it long enough to remove those moodlets, so make sure you have a little time before attempting to meditate a bad moodlet away.

After meditating for a very long time, the Sim starts to actually float! They have hit the maximum Meditative Focus.

This opens up a new interaction: Zeneport. Click on an open spot on the map and the Sim will be zapped to the new location. However, teleporting uses up all of the focus. It removes the Meditative Focus moodlet.

One of the greatest benefits of Meditating is that the effects of the Meditative Focus moodlet are universally awesome.

Having this moodlet active means your Sim will develop a skill faster, do better at work or school, and even improve your performance on an adventure.

There is no downside to meditating except for the consumption of time.

Belts

As you improve the Martial Arts skill, your Sim earns new belts. These belts physically appear on your Sim when they don the martial arts outfit, the gi, which is now an available outfit just like swimwear or formal wear.

The belts do not have specific enhancements, but denote which skill level your Sim has.

Sparring and Tournaments

When you reach level 1 of the Martial Arts skill, you get a new social interaction with other Sims who also possess the skill: Spar. When you challenge another Sim to spar, you both start a friendly match.

This is not a knock-down, drag-out fight. This is sparring for the benefit of improving the skill.

In fact, sparring with another Sim actually improves the skill faster than using a Training Dummy as long as you are a lower skill level than the other Sim in the sparring match.

Once you reach level 4 in the skill, you can enter tournaments. Tournaments only happen in China. To enter a tournament, pick up the phone and use the Challenge Spar Tournament Contender interaction.

The opponent quickly arrives at your location. Now, left-click on the rival and choose the Challenge to a Ranked Sparring Match interaction. This begins the match.

If you are victorious enough, you get to advance a rank in the tournament. Fortunately, you cannot drop down a rank, no matter how many times you may fail a sparring match.

The top rank in the Martial Arts tournament is Grand Master, which helps fulfill one of the Lifetime Wishes.

Skill Challenges

Grand Master: Reach tournament level 5 to attain the title “Grand Master.”

Master of Meditation: Meditate 150 hours to be known across the land as the “Master of Meditation”... or “MOM” for short.

Sim Fu King: Participate in 75 sparring matches.

Timber Terminator: Break at least 150 oak or greater toughness boards.

Nectar Making

When visiting France, be sure to check out the Nectary at the base of the rolling hills and sample a fine bottle. But don’t just stop there. Head downstairs at the Nectary and check out the Nectar Maker.

This piece of equipment allows you to make your very own nectar, which is not only a valuable beverage, but the effects of sharing the nectar with other Sims will definitely improve your social standing.

How to Make Nectar

Whether using the Nectar Maker at the Nectary or one purchased at the general store in France and installed at home, the process of making nectar remains the same.

First, place fruits in the Nectar Maker. You can use grapes or other fruits to create a satisfactory blend. Once the barrel of the Nectar Maker is full, squish the fruit into a pulp.

As soon as the fruit has been squished, it is time to use the Make Nectar interaction on the Nectar Maker. The machine starts to rattle and hum, turning the pulpy fruit into a liquid beverage.

The machine then places the nectar into easily portable or storable bottles and you get to name the batch. As the process happens, the Sim develops the Nectar Making skill, as seen by the blue meter overhead.

Any fruit grown via gardening or bought from a shop can be used to make nectar. However, there are now several varieties of grapes that can be grown. These grapes originate in France. The grapes are of differing color, growth speed, and rarity.

Though there are new grapes introduced in World Adventures specifically for nectar making, there are no specific recipes for making nectar; Sims just add grapes and other fruit to the Nectar Maker.

Different combinations of grapes and fruits yield different results, but these impromptu recipes do not affect quality or bottle value. Instead, the quality of the nectar is determined by the quality of the ingredients and the skill level of the Sim making it.

There are additional quality modifiers, such as upgrades a Handy Sim performs on the Nectar Maker, additional interactions earned by improving the Nectar Making skill, as well as benefit from skill challenges.

Development Benefits

As you develop the Nectar Making skill, you get better at making higher value batches of bottled nectar. Reaching specific skill levels also unlocks new interactions with the Nectar Maker.

These interactions let you further customize your batches of nectar, such as making concentrated nectar for extra-fine batches or going for mass-produced nectar.

Make Concentrated Nectar (Level 4): This new interaction makes fewer bottles of nectar per session. However, the concentrated nectar is higher quality.

Mass Produce (Level 7): Making nectar with this interaction increases the number of bottles produced, but quality suffers.

Extended Nectaration (Level 9): Making nectar with this interaction takes significantly longer, but the resulting bottles are very high quality.

Nectar Maker Upgrades

The Handiness skill allows Sims to upgrade objects. The Nectar Maker can undergo three upgrades, depending on the Handiness skill level of the Sim performing the action.

Improved Pressing (Level 5): This upgrade increases the number of bottles made in a batch of nectar. If the upgrade fails, the Nectar Maker begins producing fewer bottles. To reverse this error, attempt to upgrade the Nectar Maker again.

Make Unbreakable (Level 6): When successful, this upgrade prevents the Nectar Maker from ever breaking again. If the upgrade fails, the Nectar Maker breaks and must be repaired.

Flavor Enhancement (Level 10): This upgrade improves the value of all nectar bottles produced by the Nectar Maker. If the upgrade fails, it decreases the value of produced bottles until the upgrade is attempted again and is successful.

Skill Challenges

Nectar Master: Make 200 bottles of nectar.

Flavorful Feet: Squish 40 batches of fruit.

Vine Vizard: Harvest 400 bunches of grapes and convert into nectar 400 bunches of grapes of any variety.

Mix Master: Make 15 Nectar combinations.

Nectar Cellar

Nectar needs to be aged properly and the best place to do that is in a cellar.

To help with building a basement or cellar on your lot, World Adventures adds a brand-new Basement tool to Build Mode that makes digging out an underground floor beneath your house as easy as laying a foundation.

To dig out a cellar, go into Build Mode and select the new tool. Now, holding the left mouse button, you can stretch a rectangle across your lot to designate the basement. The basement appears in blue.

Once you release the mouse button, the basement is automatically dug. It has a perfectly flat floor and four nice walls.

What is does not have, though, is a means for getting down to the cellar where you will presumably store your nectar bottles or even your Nectar Maker. (You can also hide out in the cellar to avoid unwanted company—a nice side benefit.)

Use the stairs tool from Build Mode to create a flight of stairs leading from the surface down to your new cellar. Make sure there is empty space on the floor above for the stairs to come up through.

Photography

Much like Writing or Painting, Photography is a highly personalized skill that allows your Sims to express themselves through art. Sims can take photos while exploring a destination as well as back home in their city.

The fact that Sims can make Simoleons off those photos is just icing on the cake—the neatly photographed cake, that is.

Development Benefits

To start taking photos, you need a camera. You can buy the basic SnapTastic Flimsy-Cam (§250) at all three destinations, but only the general store in Egypt sells the other two cameras. The medium-grade camera is the ChannonTec Outlaw SE (§850).

The top-tier camera is the Hikon QX40di Gladiator (��3,250). The more expensive the camera, the more it costs to take a photo with it. Each camera has different properties that are important to budding photographers:

SnapTastic Flimsy-Cam:

This camera can only take small photos, which means it only takes low-value photos.

ChannonTec Outlaw SE:

The medium-level camera’s photos are more valuable than the SnapTastic’s. The camera can accommodate medium-sized photos and has minor zoom functionality.

Hikon QX40di Gladiator:

This camera allows large photos and has good zoom functionality. It takes the highest-value photos of all of the cameras. This is also the only camera that can take panoramic photos.

To start developing this skill, you can either use a camera to take a photo or dive into a Photography skill book. Every time you take a photo, you develop the skill a little bit.

At first, you get a moderate amount of skill for taking your photos. The first time you take a photo of a subject, you also earn a decent amount of skill-development.

However, the higher the level of the skill, the more photos you need to take to move up to the next tier. And the more often you take a photo of the same subject, the less skill it is worth.

If you try to take the same photo of a subject more than twice in a day, you receive zero skill boost for the third and every subsequent shot.

To take a photo, click on the camera in your personal inventory, select the Take Photo interaction when left-clicking on your Sim, or just press (Shift) + (C) . The camera interaction is then added to the queue of actions, if there are any.

The camera interaction screen then pops up. Use the mouse to frame the subject of your shot. The small, portrait frame is the default framing.

Depending on your camera, you can select additional sizes with the on-screen commands. If your camera has zoom functionality, use either the on-screen commands or your mouse wheel.

As you gain more skill levels, you also earn more filters for your photos, which you can choose before taking the shot. Click the mouse button to finally take the photo. The photo is then added to your collection.

Photos can be named and hung on the wall at home. Use the Reminisce interaction on a photo to get the Good Memories moodlet.

As you increase your skill level, you get extra filters and aspect ratios for your shots. These extra filters affect the value of the photo, as does the selected size of the photo.

Photo Collections

Almost every single photo that you take can be categorized into one of the photo collections. When you first start taking photos, no collections are noted in your Skill Journal.

However, when you do take a photo that belongs to one, that collection is “unlocked” and appears in your Skill Journal.

Each photo in a collection has a base value, which can be multiplied by the modifiers listed above (filter, size).

World Adventures does have some effects on the Fishing and Gardening skills, too. Each destination introduces new plants and fish that you can catch and then bring home.

Fishing

Every new destination has bodies of water that invite a rod and reel. There are several new species of fish in World Adventures, and they are as exotic as the destinations you find them in, like Egypt’s Mummy Fish. Not every fish can be caught right away.

Some require higher levels of fishing skill to land. But as you fish while on vacation, you can continue to develop that useful skill and one day be able to reel in every type of fish.

Gardening

The fruits from the plants—especially the grapes—will help you keep producing sweet nectar at home with your very own Nectar Maker. Each destination has its own unique plants that bear fruit, which can then be transported home and planted on your own lot.

If you visit Egypt and pocket a few pomegranates, for example, you could have your very own pomegranate orchard at home up and growing within days.
