Potions

Awkward Potion

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing item Brew a Water Bottle and Nether Wart This is the core potion that leads to all useful secondary and tertiary potions

Awkward Potions don’t do anything neat by themselves, but they’re the foundation of brewing. Create a garden of Nether Wart to provide ingredients, and then brew as many Awkward Potions as possible with your surplus Nether Wart.

Awkward Potions are then used as ingredients for more complex potions. The number of effects is impressive: healing, harming, health regeneration, poison, faster movement, resistance to fire, breathing underwater, etc. Everything related to brewing comes from Awkward Potions. Brew them. Love them!

Mundane Potion

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing Item Brew a Water Bottle with almost any common brewing ingredient Can make a Potion of Weakness

Mundane Potions aren’t of any use. They can be brewed again to make a Potion of Weakness, but that’s not a great value either. You need to get Nether Wart and make Awkward Potions to get into serious brewing.

Mundane Potion (X)

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing item Brew a Water Bottle and Redstone Can make an extended Potion of Weakness

This potion doesn’t do anything important, but it shows off the core power of Redstone in brewing (i.e., to extend the duration of potions).

Potion of Fire Resistance

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing item Brew an Awkward Potion with Magma Cream Protects against Lava, fire, and burning damage

If you’re working around Lava frequently or fighting monsters in Nether Fortresses, it’s great to have a Potion of Fire Resistance around. Blazes are much easier to handle when their attacks don’t burn you.

Potion of Harming

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing item Brew a Potion of Healing or Poison with a Fermented Spider Eye Deals instant damage to a target

Potions of Harming are excellent weapons against heavily armored targets. These potions work great in PvP combat against players with enchanted Diamond Armor!

Potion of Healing

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing item Brew an Awkward Potion with Glistering Melon Heals targets instantly

Potions of Healing restore health as soon as they are used. Drinking them is fine, but Splash Potions of Healing are even faster because they work as soon as you throw them onto yourself—and they heal friends if you throw them at allies or NPCs. Bring these along when fighting Withers, Ender Dragons, or other players.

Potion of Invisibility

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing item Brew a Potion of Night Vision with a Fermented Spider Eye Turns you invisible

Potions of Invisibility are fun for sneaking or avoiding conflict. Your weapons and armor are still visible, so remove them if you want to be completely undetectable. Use these potions around other players to sneak into their bases, scout, and cause chaos.

Potion of Leaping

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing item Brew an Awkward Potion with a Rabbit’s Foot Jumping higher than ever before

This potion allows your character to get through rough vertical terrain without having to do as much tunneling and stair construction. It’s most useful when exploring places you’re not going to return to very often. It’s also fun if you’re arranging free running races with your friends and want to get an edge (as long as that’s allowable by whatever rules you come up with).

Potion of Night Vision

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing item Brew an Awkward Potion with a Golden Carrot You can see well at any light level

Potions of Night Vision are great when you’re underground, in the Nether, or hunting The End. You can see well across long distances, pick out strange areas or buildings, and fight against monsters that would otherwise have a big advantage over you. Your success in battles against Withers depends heavily on these potions, because Withers love to blow up everything around them, including Torches!

Potion of Poison

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing item Brew an Awkward Potion with a Spider Eye Dealing damage over time

Potions of Poison deal consistent damage over time, regardless of the target’s armor. They’re nasty to use against other players, especially if your target has enchanted Diamond Armor. Many monsters are immune or resistant to poison damage.

Potion of Regeneration

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing item Brew an Awkward Potion with a Ghast Tear Restores health over time

Potions of Regeneration don’t heal you quickly like a Potion of Healing, but they add a tremendous amount of health to your character over time. Combine this with a full health bar to ensure that you heal quickly from all minor wounds. Save Splash Potions of Healing to restore yourself almost instantly from more severe injuries.

Potion of Slowness

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing item Brew a Potion of Fire Resistance or Swiftness with a Fermented Spider Eye Slows movement

Make a Splash Potion of Slowness and throw it at enemies that you’re trying to avoid. These potions are fairly effective against other characters.

Potion of Strength

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing item Brew an Awkward Potion with Blaze Powder Dramatically increases melee damage output

Use these powerful potions any time you deal with dangerous enemies. They’re ideal when fighting in Nether Fortresses or when attacking Withers, Iron Golems, or any other scary beasts.

Potion of Swiftness

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing item Brew an Awkward Potion with Sugar Improves movement and jumping speed

Potions of Swiftness are very useful when exploring on foot, or if you fight fast creatures and need to maintain a speed advantage against them. They’re nice for dealing with some of the Nether’s dangerous monsters because many possess ranged attacks or high speed.

Potion of Water Breathing

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing item Brew an Awkward Potion with a Pufferfish You can breathe underwater

Potions of Water Breathing provide several minutes to swim underwater without the fear of drowning. It’s nice to have these when exploring deep water, looking through underground caves, or if you want to create interesting structures underwater without having to wall off the area ahead of time.

Potion of Weakness

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing item Brew a Water Bottle with a Fermented Spider Eye Reduces damage output

Potions of Weakness reduce your damage output for a moderate period. They’re useful only if you brew them into Splash Potions of Weakness to use against other targets, and even then they aren’t especially important.

Thick Potion

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing item Brew a Water Bottle with Glowstone Dust Brewing Potions

This is just a precursor potion to a Potion of Weakness. To accomplish more powerful brewing, make an Awkward Potion and move up from there.

Water Bottle

Location Gathered With Uses
Brewing item Add Water to a Glass Bottle Brewing potions

Fill a Glass Bottle with Water to create the most basic “potion.” Use either a Water source or a Cauldron to put Water into these bottles. These items become the starting point for potions, as explained in the “You Can Do Anything with a Little Practice” chapter.
