Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus eGuide Basic Training

Movement

During your mission, you encounter various terrain types and obstacles. Expect fighting to take place in any number of situations and surroundings, from narrow corridors to the wide-open outdoors. The ability to adapt to each unique circumstance is vital to survival.

Walking

Walking is your default mode of movement. It’s relatively quiet and easy to control. Walking with your gun aimed allows you to respond to enemies quickly and accurately. You can also sneak up on enemies when walking.

Crouching

Crouching is essentially your stealth mode. A good deal of situations you encounter call for stealth tactics beyond the capabilities of your standard walking mode. To maintain stealth, stay crouched as you move.

Pros:

  • This is your quietest movement mode.
  • You can hide behind cover.
  • You’re below the level of most railings and low cover.
  • Enemies have a tougher time detecting you.
  • Enemies have a tougher time hitting you since you make a smaller target.
  • Your lower center of gravity lends increased accuracy to your shots.

Cons:

  • This is your slowest movement speed.

Many of your missions take place in locations containing vents, which often allow you to move around the edges of an area unseen or to reach rooms otherwise inaccessible. Vent entrances tend to be low to the ground. Crouch to enter them.

Sprinting

In direct contrast to stealth tactics, some situations require speed—you may need to dive straight into a fight, or rapidly retreat from a losing battle.

Pros:

  • This is your fastest movement speed.

Cons:

  • This is your loudest movement mode.
  • Enemies can hear and detect you, regardless of whether they can see you or are looking in your direction.
  • Stealth is not possible when sprinting.Jumping

Jumping gets you over obstacles or up onto elevated areas. Try jumping over railings to reach other terrain without having to circumnavigate the railings. Jump while sprinting to increase the distance of your jump.

Strafing

Strafing is a form of combat maneuvering. Think of it as strategic sidestepping. To strafe, you move right or left while continually facing forward. During combat, this lets you keep your aim on a target while moving. It takes some practice, but the benefits are worth the effort. Strafing is covered in more detail in the next section.
