Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus eGuide Basic Training

Equipment

As you explore, always keep an eye out for equipment lying around. Take note that there’s a difference between equipment pickups and Collectible pickups. Collectibles, which come in several forms, are items that add to the storyline in various ways. Equipment, meanwhile, comprises an array of functional items that help you stay in the fight. For more on both equipment and Collectibles, see the Pickups chapter.

First-Aid Kits

No matter how careful you are, expect to take damage. Damage decreases your health. To regain health, pick up first-aid kits. Once you build back to your normal health level, continue picking up kits—you can increase your health up to twice its normal level. However, you lose the extra health over time. It’s a good idea to double your health before heading into a firefight, especially against particularly powerful enemies.

Ammo

When you kill enemies, they leave behind ammo on the ground. Usually a dropped ammo item looks like the weapon the enemy was carrying. Also be on the lookout for containers of ammo positioned around levels. In some areas, you can find fuel for Dieselkraftwerk and batteries for Laserkraftwerk. Snag all available ammo whenever you come across it. Chances are, you’re going to need every bit you can get your hands on when fighting legions of Nazis.

Armor

Armor absorbs some of the damage when you’re hit by enemy fire. Replenish your armor value by picking up more. The more armor you have, the more damage you can take and stay in the fight. Armor pickups are positioned around various levels, and some armored units leave behind bits of armor when defeated. Grab all the armor you find. As with first-aid kits, you’ll need every scrap of it.

Maps

Every game level includes a map item somewhere. Look for a tube inscribed with the word “Karte.” Once you collect it, open the Map View screen to reveal the map for that level. Maps are a fantastic aid when you’re planning routes and tactics and ensuring you’ve explored all areas, so they’re worth hunting down.

Weapon Upgrades

You don’t come across weapon upgrades as often as first-aid kits, ammo, and armor pickups, but finding one is always a pleasant surprise. Each weapon upgrade pickup allows you to select one upgrade for one of your weapons. Choose wisely—using an upgrade represents a permanent choice; there’s no changing your mind and using it for a different upgrade later. For more on weapon upgrades, check out the Armory chapter.

Enigma Codes

Each Kommandant carries an Enigma Code. After killing a Kommandant, be sure to pick up the code. When you return to Evas Hammer, use the codes in the Engima Machine to unlock Überkommandant missions. For mission specifics, flip past the walkthrough to the Überkommandant Missions chapter.

Contraptions

Eventually you reach a point in the progression of the Campaign where you can use contraptions. You’re offered three contraptions to choose from—you only get one. Each provides unique special abilities, so pick the one that best suits your playstyle. For more details on contraptions, including a breakdown of available abilities, flip ahead to the Perks chapter.
