In Search of Candy At Any Cost
The Gatekeepers’ Perspective
It seems you just can’t count on the common decency of Animal folk around these parts. Why, there’s perfectly good Candy sitting in those trees, more than any normal person could ever want. But these Animals? They’re insatiable! Constantly gobbling up all the goodies until their heads have swollen so large they can barely move. That’s fine, though. As Gatekeepers, we have the ability to search for would-be thieves independently of each other—using the GamePad. The Left Stick controls one Gatekeeper, while the Right Stick controls the other, and the ZL and ZR Buttons let them each tackle enemies as they see fit. Sure, it might be a little difficult to keep track of everything all at once, but with a little practice, those critters don’t stands a chance.
The Animals’ Perspective
What has gotten into those strange Gatekeepers? Does the sweet, delicious Candy dotting this lush landscape not come from nature itself? Is it not there, waiting—no, asking —to be plucked from the dirty ground, wiped clean, and deposited into our hungry tummies? Of course! Plus, it’s not like we Animals are greedy; we can easily drop candies if we need to, though that’s usually to help us speed up and get away from those pesky Gatekeepers. No matter, what was once dropped voluntarily can be picked up again. Involuntary loss, like being tackled by the Gatekeepers, forces some candy out that can’t be recovered, so stay away from those Gatekeepers. Long live the giant-headed Animals!

General Hunting Tips
As the Gatekeepers: Being in control of two separate characters at once can be a brain-scrambling exercise at first. Start by moving together and execute pincer attacks by surrounding any Animals you might find on two sides. With a little practice, it becomes quite easy to herd Animals around, chasing an Animal with one Gatekeeper while drawing them toward the second. The view on the GamePad expands constantly to accommodate the Gatekeepers distance from each other, but don’t stray too far. The biggest advantage the silverware-wielding protectors have is their coordination, and you can’t coordinate two Gatekeepers well when they are at opposite ends of the map.
As Animals: Candy, delicious Candy! Though it may be tempting to start gobbling up everything in sight, remember this cardinal rule: The more Candy an Animal is holding, the slower their movement speed. Without any Candy, they can easily outrun the Gatekeepers, but when burdened by a huge head, they’re slow and easy to capture. Drop Candy in an area that your Animal allies can get to while you lead the Gatekeepers away. Don’t just play scrounger; you can store Candies in a Candy Stash before going to grab more. When playing with friends, remember that Candy Trees have multiple candy switches near them. If you and your Animal buddies stand on these switches , the Tree will release huge amounts of Candy!

1. Sweet Day Island Tour
2. Downtown Sweet Day
Downtown Sweet Day is a bit more dense than the first seaside stage, and that means two things: There are more chances for Animals to slip out via alternate means, and more chances for Gatekeepers to use their superior overhead view to get the drop on Animals. This is a stage filled with plenty of Candy Trees, so it’s important that Gatekeepers hang back while the Animals try to use the Trees to reveal tons of Candy spoils. Because they have to step onto the plates near the Trees for a few seconds, a random surprise attack from behind a nearby building or a pincer attack from the left and right is a perfect ambush situation. Try to keep the Gatekeepers relatively close to each other, but not so close that their advantage of seeing more of the downtown area is compromised. For Animals, distraction and relocation are equally important. For games with three or more players, consider dropping Candy near the group of normal trees in the upper corner of downtown. The many routes around the trees can make for a confusing and effective escape as the Gatekeepers try to anticipate where you’re going to move in for the tackle.
